Moneyball

Does this really work with football though? Better sticking to ice hockey or american football.

Yes/no. It's really an approach, not necessarily a defined system of rules. In baseball, which has a high concentration of luck, people realized you can game the odds in your favor in ways that everyone else had missed. You can't *really* do that in football, the outcome of which is more determined by skill/talent.

But you can focus on refining statistics to better understand cause and effect on the pitch, and to help find undervalued players/assets. And, as much as some fans don't like the idea, ALL clubs are doing this.

To very varying degrees, that is. Some have a full top-class department that are highly involved in advising upper management. Others just have one recent graduate doing their best who probably isn't listened to all that much (we just hired some kid this summer actually).

For an example of clubs that are smashing it with this approach, see Leipzig and Monaco. Both have invested heavily in analytics, player development, recruitment and innovative managers. It's the approach we need to take, and we have the resources to do it.

For my money, this is the only true way to game the system in football, particularly in England. The most undervalued, untapped resource in the sport are young players in England.

Spurs spent £15m or so on their attacking troika of Kane, Eriksen and Alli. If Everton want to catch up, they need to turn their half dozen young attackers into something.

Unfortunately I think Koeman could barely develop a bad rash. At least they're getting game time.

Typical after a bad game over reaction, the RS got blatted today, Arsenal the previous game. Shh happens, we are exactly where we knew we would be, no where near the front runners but should have enough to see off the rest.

good way of trying to avoid the shocking flaws of Koeman.

Koeman was responsible today of course but he asked for a target man and a left footed center-back and I blame that on the board for not delivering. It's still 4 games into his 2nd season so I won't quick to draw conclusion. At least he is better than the previous clown we had.

We haven't played well in any game this season though tbh.

Totally agree, for the most part we have played pants. It needs to improve and quick, although can't see it getting any better in the next game. :(

Ron still hasn't learnt his best team or system to get the most out of them yet, so to me it's too early to start coming up with accusations of moneyball, esp. seeing we have overpaid for most.

It's more like 8 games and we've done nothing so far.
