Loan is the best option for him and us.

I would have sent him on loan to the Championship, let him get a good run of games and score a few which I think he would. Get his confidence up and get him used to regular football in England.
Just get the feeling with him he just wants to go back to Italy though.

All that I will say is that I've seen people jump to such conclusions in the past from team selections, and with few rare exceptions the conclusions have generally turned out to be unfounded
