I dunno. Like everything else, it's a fad. Similar was the habit folk had of saying "we need to have that conversation" and a few years ago, they were saying "Absolutely!" all the time. I don't hear those phrases so often now on the 26 bus into town!I also posted a thread on this. I can't abide the practice.
When people start the sentences with the word, it seems as if they need a further millisecond or so to formulate a response.
Pure idleness.
I suppose language has many ways of developing over time and that's well and good, but I do think too much of the English tongue has been influenced by media coming from the USA.
