Mikel Arteta

Arsenal had wanted Fellaini earlier on in the window (maybe a day or two before), which we had rebuffed despite the fact we were under pressure to sell a player to ease issues with the bank

Fellaini's agent Christophe Henrotay was/is very friendly with Arteta's agent (from memory I think he's called Ibanez(!?)) - through a conversation between the two, Arteta found out about Arsenal's desire to buy a centre mid and he instigated the deal himself by asking his agent to see if Arsenal would be interested in signing him. They were. Arteta then used every trick in the book on deadline day to make sure he got his move, including threatening to go public about his desire to move to Arsenal, which would have caused us big problems with the bank if they knew we had turned down a sizeable offer for a player when they wanted us to address our overdraft issue.

In the end, Arteta had us over a barrel and he knew it. We managed to get £10m for him I think, which was Arsenals 2nd bid after we turned down a pathetic £5m. The only concession he made, after we had agreed to sell him, was to submit a transfer request to help us "sell" the sale to the fans

Moyes and Kenwright were shocked at how he acted in trying to get his move as he had never really given any indication that he's be capable of that in the past, although his agent had been a pretty tough negotiator for the two major contracts he had sorted for Arteta here
The guy also took a pay cut and it was his last chance to play at the top level.

He provided us great service. We made a good profit and he left us after he gave us his best years. Not sure why anyone would begrudge him the move.

@Efcjake
Would you offer him the position of manager?

No, not today as he's further behind Unsworth but both need lower league experience in the top job before I could contemplate interviewing them.

If you're wondering why I liked your post though it's because curiosity got the best of me. I used to remember someone else who brought up Arteta taking a pay cut.:coffee:

Rubbish just because someone earns 70k a week doesn't mean it's always for money. Arteta took a paycut to leave. I understand that players want to test themselves at the highest level and win trophies. They want the same as us. The only difference is they can change clubs :)

The thing is. If we don't invest in the team then we start to fall back in the league and while we can cope with one or maybe two seasons it starts to effect the players you can attract and even how much you then need to pay them or pay for their transfers. Sunderland don't get as good a value for money as us. e.g. Lennon wants to come here and is willing to hold out so Spurs lower their cost. Arteta was willing to take a pay cut to go to Arsenal.

A slow death is not a good option.

Remember people calling him a crab next to their motd favourite Fellaini. Hopefully those same people are now discovering the true meaning of the word after watching Schneidercrab and Idrissa Crab. Honestly him Pienaar and Cahill were taken for granted at their peak. They’d absolutely murder the current team.
