Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Morning everyone.

We had a fab couple of days in town.

Seems a bit mad staying over when we live 40 minutes away but there were reasons and it was fun.

So, we booked into A Hard Days Night hotel on North John St. For those of you not intimately familiar with the city centre it's close to Liverpool One and 10 minutes walk to Albert Dock.

The hotel is great and I'm happy to recommend it provided that you aren't a light sleeper. No problem with rowdy guests just that you hear the rumble of Merseyrail trains underneath the hotel and I was woken when they start up at 6am or so. Mrs J slept like a log - as she should do in that hotel having been working like a dog 😂.

The reason we stayed over was to go to the Paul Simon gig at the M&S Bank Arena and we didn't want to risk having to leave early and miss the encore.

The gig was stunning . I've seen some people complain on social media but FFS he is 84 and deaf in one ear and the concert was called A Quiet Celebration, what the hell did they expect ? Paul banging out S&G numbers for 3 hours? Anyway both me and Mrs J who unlike me isn't a massive fan loved it even though his voice was frail. The vulnerability of his voice gave a depth and poignancy to the songs that he carefully chose to suit his situation.

Prior to the gig we had a meal at Maray in Albert Dock and I can thoroughly recommend it especially for veggies like me and @Gwladysover

Yesterday I resumed my walking tour for the benefit of Mrs J. She's a Scouser but wasn't sure if she had ever been to Mathew St ! Sacre bleu ! As she said ..."I only came into town for meetings in Sir Thomas St and then walk up to Bold St to Mattas" 😂.

Anyway we had a lovely walk and then an even better lunch in the Ivy on Castle St. The Heritage menu is amazing value at £21 for 2 courses and it's beautiful in there a real treat . The service is spot on . All Scousers , nothing aloof or patronizing but professional, respectful , and fun . Perfect.

Then the train home and a kip.

All in all a lovely treat.
I have a good friend who is a Beatles fanatic and always stays at the Hard Days Night Hotel. He tells me it was bought over a couple of years ago and is becoming less Beatles orientated every time he visits. Less pictures and memorabilia sort of thing. I only know it’s bar as it’s a perfect spot for a pint and people watching while the Mrs is trawling around Liverpool One.

I see your point entirely about the gig. I often wryly smile when someone complains that an artist doesn’t write songs like they used to! Well maybe that’s because they are now 30 years older with a wealth of new life experiences 😀

Sorry to bring the mood down but I'm still fuming at the idiocy of my townsfolk. 😡
People have long since stopped thinking for themselves.
Since Tressell's quote this sort of propaganda has of course been amplified by TV and the internet.

I feel your pain Kev. Intolerance seems to be the order of the day now. Two weeks ago I heard a spectator use the ‘N’ word to an opposition player. Now he was thrown out immediately which was good but it was the first time my son had ever heard that word used in real life. He’s 16 and was flabbergasted that someone would say that.

Out walking this afternoon to make the most of a lovely day. Here’s a pic of the rude gargoyle on St Benedict’s church, Glinton. Legend is the stonemason found out he wasn’t going to be paid the agreed fee for his work so carved the last one baring his backside. Photo isn’t that clear but you can just make out his head poking between his legs. By coincidence I managed to snap a kite flying overhead.

That’s a brilliant picture. I love the thought behind it as a an act of vengeance

I’m really glad that you and your wife had a great time. Enjoy life while you can….

I can't say I'll miss this travesty of a circus. First time in my life RTÉ not showing it, but I commend the broadcaster - not something I often do.

Say a little prayer that Penny the beloved dog of Tom, who passed recently, is found. She has gone missing since Tom's funeral and is probably traumatized.

Never underestimate how sensitive our beloved canines can be.

Kilkenny Gardaí and Kilkenny SPCA as well as loads of Tom's family and friends searching for her.

Hopefully she is just hiding somewhere close to home and will turn up. 🙏

Now we need to decline to play the football match. There will be sanctions of course but at least we will be on the right side of history.
