Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

It's good that the PGA have banned them. They should also ban courses that host LIV tournaments, and punters should also boycott said tournaments as should TV companies. But you just know the latter won't happen.

Its a difficult minefield though. They are professional golfers. Thats what they do. Plenty of European based players decide to play in Merica cos, well, the pay days are far larger than the European Tour.

I used to follow the European Senior tour, (a mate is on it), and big name players like Woosnam and the Scottish guy whose name has escaped me, Mrs Doubtfire, would only play the tournaments with the largest purses. Sponsors paid them to play, on top of the purse they might win.

So someone will pay a few golfers £100m, just to sign up, and offer the "make up the numbers" ones purses they couldnt get near in the PGA and European tours, is that really any different?

We have golf, F1, boxing, a W/C hosted and paid for in that part of the world as it is. I really struggle why fellas maxing out their income is in some way a moralistic cul de sac.

edit. Colin Montgomery.

To me it's very similar to the European Super league that they were trying to set up. Let them do it if that's what they want but at the cost of also participating in mainstream sport. Very similar to the Kerry Packer thing back in the 70s with the cricket.

In many sports the established bodies/organisations provide funding to grass root sports, A sort of giving back to the communities as it were and helping ensure that the next generation of sporting stars are coming through. These private enterprises take the elite players away from that system therefore depriving the organisations of a lot of income. You get the likes of the Diamond League in athletics which is also elitist that is the exception, but this is sanctioned by the IAAF so presumably the organisers pay them some sort of royalties.

The added thing with this particular case is that to many people the backers (Saudi Arabia) are seen as a bit of a rogue state due to their actions in Yemen.

Edit

I also feel that many people are just generally getting fed up with the amount of money these sorting stars are earning, at a time when there is so much poverty in the world. Not just the golfers but in general.

Tis the way it is mate. The ME involvement is really little different, like you say, to Packer.

But lets not let this beautiful thread be derailed too much. (Me, not you).

I'm sure if the Packer thing happened today there would be the same sort of outrage. There just wasn't the platform in the 79s for people to show it.

The beauty of this thread mate is that no Subject is really off topic, so long as it is discussed in a nice way, ie upholding the concept that people are entitled to different views.

Had a lovely day in Stamford. Here’s a few pictures of St. Martin’s church, some of my ancestors were baptised and married there. The monuments are to members of the Cecil family from nearby Burghley House no family connection there surprise, surprise lol but my ancestors were baptised in the font which dates from the early 14th century.View attachment 169501View attachment 169502View attachment 169503View attachment 169504View attachment 169505View attachment 169506View attachment 169500
I love old churches Gwladys. We often used to visit them and tge graveyards which are always very peaceful places. Mind you, you wouldn't find me near one after dark.

That looks amazing. I love seeing around churches when I’m somewhere different.

First time I was in the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool there was an Everton exhibition on (maybe football in the city) and I couldn’t believe it. Then I saw that there was also a cafe attached to the cathedral. Again, couldn’t believe it.

Such a difference to the churches I was used to at home.

Having said that, I was about 22 before I first set foot in a Protestant Church and you don’t get much more sheltered an upbringing than that.

Hello, we had a lovely afternoon. Went for lunch, had a couple of drinks sitting outside one of the pubs in the Market Place. Walked round the park - named South Park which always makes me laugh - and then went to see Jurassic World. It was brilliant. Utterly daft but very watchable. I loved it. Here's a couple pf pics from South Park, Darlington. Kenny and Cartman not included!
