Once again (and I'm sure it'll have been mentioned earlier in this thread), the NRA ignore the context of the 2nd Amendment:

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

The point of the 2nd Amendment is to allow the people to form an army to protect the nation from invasion/coup etc. It is not for protecting your self or your property against burglars, and it's not for shooting kids in schools.

Keep all firearms at shooting clubs or highly secure vaults (an annex to the local police station, for example), to be accessed only in times of emergency on the orders of the governor/mayor etc.
On the other hand an armed populace serves to keep the state from getting too big for its boots.

I was watching a documentary about the KKK earlier this week & they pretty much all have concealed gun licenses. My point is, they give them out like Smarties.

As for that link posted upthread - speechless.

yeah it deffo isnt JUST the gun laws, which actually strenghens the idea to have more gun control not weaken it
i completely agree, just shows what a task it would be to sort out americas gun culture, like turning around a super tanker at this point, i hope obama has the balls do something significant, plenty of gun toting republicans in the senate i imagine though

Is that really a common concern for Americans? They hold firearms to protect themselves from assailants, not the Armed Forces. That's not what the 2nd Amendment was intended for.

so the reason why the US has three time more people in prison than China (with less than a quarter of its population), and imprisons people at a higher rate than the peak of the Soviet Gulag system is... still not enough guns yet???

what better example could there be of an abusive out-of-control state than that?

i make it 1 too many to do nothing about it, which appears to be your suggestion
Hooliganism killed those people but foreign towns and people still got smashed up every couple of years by England fans so a ban didnt address the problem

Maybe they fear that slight legislative change now will lead to a full ban in the future?

The thing is, gun rights are part of the fabric of American society. The only way guns will ever be banned will be if the deaths get SO out of hand that people demand en masse for them to be banned

It's in the nra's interest to reform the gun laws, otherwise people will eventually turn

They won't, and it isnt though. The problem with the US and gun control is that there are so many firearms in circulation (probably more than a billion) that it would be impossible to have any agreed reform - it wouldn't do anything apart from taking guns off people who held them legally and who wouldn't have been going around doing these spree killings. The only thing that would work is a mass gun hunt involving all sections of the military and law enforcement descending en masse and seizing everyone's guns, which would probably result in a bloodbath.

What would be better for them to do is to look honestly at why it is that people want to do these things; if you look at most spree killers there are a surprising number of common factors that are to an extent made worse by the unique nature of US society.

Has america ever tried an amnesty of some kind for people to hand guns in without being charged, I wonder what the results would be
