McCarthy and young Ross...

Why was that midfield broken up so young? Why??All three sold before they were 30.

Catterick thought it was good business to sell Bally for £220,000 (I think) which was a record fee at the time.
Bally was had an indifferent season because he had not rest after the 70 world cup and Catterick thought it was a good time to sell. Bally was devastated. Also heard unproven rumours of Bally having big gambling debts which was affecting his game. Either way it was a big mistake as Bally was the key player in the trinity. Unreplaceable

McCarthy really is a top player. I thought he was very good signing but he's proving excellent. Hard to tell what the plan is for Ross (long term) maybe RM is not sure himself yet, is he gonna remain our No.10 or is the eventual plan for him to drop a bit deeper next to McCarthy because I think he's capable of both roles?

With having Barry it's not a decision that needs to be made now I suppose although you would think it could make a difference to what CM we eventually sign where barkley's role is gonna be. Or maybe like arsenal we'll look to have players capable of playing all CM roles.

...too early to compare with the Holy Trinity, would think a truer man-to-man comparison is with the mid-80s combination. 2 truly combative central midfielders who could also play in Reid and Bracewell is more akin to Barry and McCarthy. Ball, Kendall and Harvey were something else.

So who would be the third member of the trinity?

I think eventually Barkley will move into a central midfield position alongside McCarthy, so we need to find someone for the ACM position that can work with the two.

The one player I would love us to get is Miralem Pjanic from Roma, only 23, he is the creative hub of a superb Roma midfield with De Rossi and Strootman behind him. His passing, ball-control and vision is second to none. Problem is Spurs want him as well.

He would add another dimension to our midfield and would be able to make those killer throughballs that our current play does not have.

Hopefully Ryan Ledson lives up to his hype or that John Lundstram breaks though. Would ideally love to get Will Hughes from derby though think he would compliment Ross and james to a tee

I wonder if anyone thinks we paid to much for McCarthy now?

Well we did pay more than he was worth at the time. Wigan knew that Bob desperately wanted him (and now we all know why) and probably had to pay around a 3-4M premium for his services. But so did Utd for Fellani. Such is life at the end of the transfer window.

He's a much better fit than Fellani was in this system as he seems to know what to do when we have possession in the attacking end and possession is something we've had quite a bit of recently.

So true. I feel sorry for the younger Blues who didn't have the chance to see him play.Still remember how I felt when I saw the newspaper headlines (on my way to see friends who were all Reds)

Remember when the teams were announced. It was often the case that one of the three would be injured, so if all three names came up we all knew that we would batter whoever we were playing. HK's views on how the midfield develops will be worth reading having been part of the best ever and having built the next best...... Ross and McCarthy, if we can stop Bill from selling them, will bring back the good times.......

Bally was always into horse racing and did have debts.
Wouldn't surprise me walking the same path as Mick Channon. But's he's a racehorse trainer now. He's got SAF's and a few others no to mention any names not sure if he had any of his though
