I don't know if all the bandwagoners when the Cup come around are dense and think we are awesome.

I think it's more or less the fact we know we AREN'T a world power. America loves the underdog. And in Football, compared to Hockey/Hoops/Baseball - the other team sports that are followed here and played internationally, we are the underdog.

I see more people fired up to root on our scrappy bunch of turbo gash footballers than our "Dream Teams" playing hoops in the Olympics. Hell, some of the teams that followed the original Bird/Jordan/Magic/etc Dream Team probably got as much bashing as you lids do to Ingerland. More, even, considering our population. (And our most venerated team? The 1980 US Men's hockey team - a bunch of college kids - that beat the mighty Soviets and then won the gold. Every February you can tune in to sports talk radio and know you'll hear Mike Eruzione making the anniversary rounds.)

And for those of us that follow the sport, we're not only an underdog, we realize we are hated by many both at home and abroad. So no wonder we get fired up. Every success, however ugly, is like a solitary finger salute for the haters at home and a flipped bird to the piss takers abroad.
Of course if we turn into a world power I'm sure people will glorify a US team that wins the WC too.:D

Haters will hate. They don't matter. However had a guy say he thinks soccer is boring most of the time but watching it played at the highest level is "exhilirating". That's someone who can be converted. Too many people in this country are not used to seeing the game played at it's highest level and unlike me, they've never made an effort to seek out a team. So they can support their country without fear and they have skin in the game.

The USMNT is the only thing that will catapult this sport near the top (it will never be bigger than NFL), but there's not reason it can't be on par with hockey.

Very few people hate soccer anymore. The country as a whole likes it, but in small easily digestible doses that will never interfere with the nfl or college football. Its kind of like the Olympics (only a bit bigger now IMO) for us. Every couple of years or so the public is happy to watch the WC and the Euros.

Not true lots of people hate soccer and love to tell you how much. As you say though, even they will watch the WC, if only to talk specifically about the things they hate.

Premier League pulled as many as 750,000 viewers this year for some matches. Not sure if that's TVs as opposed to proper viewers (50 people at The Playground at 7am on a Saturday) ... or internet streams.

And, again, the matches are in hte morning... beneficial against college football (hand egg), but for me in the left coast, regular matches started pretty early and the early matches, like @Man Citeh started at like 4am. So huge chunks of our populated (and football happy) left coast were probably still counting sheep.

With NBC giving proper coverage and with BeinSports showing La Liga, Serie A, Ligue Uhnnnnnnnnnnn and some Budesliga, we'll have more and more youth growing up seeing it at the same level as the NHL/NBA/NFL, something that has been long absent. If we can continue to develop the MLS as well, we'll continue to grow the sport.

It will supplant hockey, I believe, as the 4th. And I say this as a huge Bruins fan.

I don't think the kids watch much TV. They are too busy with FIFA 14 on their Xbox. So is Landon though ;)
