A friend of mine used to see this American girl, she was insanely fit, anyway, her brother had been all over his Facebook going on about how well you played last night.

So not all you guys are as clued up as you mate.

It may or may not shock you that this guy is a Man City 'fan'.

Undoubtedly there are some - like that nub or the Real Madrid "fans" from the vid someone posted. And with 300,000,000 people, even if that some is 1%, it's a lot. On my social media (FB/Twit) feed, just tons of concerned posts lamenting our shortcomings and injuries, but joy with the result.

The way it should be I reckon.

I honestly think it's just a matter of time until USA reach a semi final. Maybe not this time. But who knows.

That pool of people to choose from simply had to produce a world class player at some point. It has to.

Should have happened in 2002. It took an intentional handball by Frings to keep us out.

Real fans of the USA (and footy in the US in general) have to be careful to not fall into the hipster trap aka "I liked this before you and therefore you aren't a real fan." As was pretty widely stated last night on twitter, we need to embrace the new fan and hope that they stick around this time because they'll get less cringeworthy and the sport will grow because of it.

I've watched footy religiously since the 1990 world cup when I sat on my dads knee. I still have VHS recordings of that tournament. I was raised in a small southern US town and fans of soccer are a rarity. Hell, Sunday morning, our local cable provider didn't even televise the early fixture on ABC because local access church services were on instead. I had to watch it in Spanish like the good old days.

We've come a long way, but armchair fans won't ever become more than that if they are shunned.
If you don't mind me asking, where in the south are you from? I'm also a small southern town guy.

Great post also.

I don't watch the TMNT, as most of you know, so this was the first time I actually sat down and watched them.

I realize one game isn't a great sample size, but here's what I saw -

1) Jozy is better for the US than he is in the league. Probably due to the quality of the defense. He's a immensely strong player, and was bullying the Ghana defense. He's still gash, as that doesn't work in the top leagues - it's a alot harder to bully Distin like he was bullying Ghana.

2) Bradley was terrible. I understand it may have been a poor game, but he was the worst player on the pitch. By an absolute mile. If the US lost, it was squarely on his shoulders and his inability to keep the ball. His vision was slow and poor. He consistently chose the wrong pass, and then normally put it off target anyway. He had the ball easily taken off his feet multiple times. His work rate was solid, but he was truly truly terrible.

3) Either the Ghanian right flank is awesome, or the US left flank is an area of serious concern. I tend to believe the latter. Beasley was caught up field over and over again. I don't think the diamond was great for offering him cover. Only the Ghanaian wastefulness let the US off here.

4) Howard played brilliantly. He made the right decision time and again. The goal was something he couldn't be expected to reasonably save. He did a good job repeatedly of choosing when to come off his line and when to stay back - which has never been a strength of Howard. That was good to see.

5) Jones/Beckerman were pretty solid. They, alongside Howard, were the best Americans on the pitch.

Hope for all you real USA fans that the US improves going forward, otherwise I think 3rd in the group is the result.

Oh, and I was reminded again why I can't root for the US - my god has it been annoying seeing tweets and posts about how the USA team is so great. Acting like they've won the world cup. I realize this is not from the genuine fans, but the bandwagoners. And they are awful, awful, Kopites.

1. Prem defenders have faced many a player like Jozy. The competetion declines on the world stage so he could be a much better player there. Once he gets back in a league that suits his talents he'll be OK. My 1st thought when he signed for SLAND was WHY (the why was $$$)?! YOU DON'T FIT THERE. Good news is that he's still young for a big striker and there is room to improve.

2. I've watched Bradley since he was back in the U-19s. Worst game I ever saw him play. If he wasn't an established player I'd be really worried, but he's bounced back from bad club situtations so he's used to ups and downs. Another performance like that is unacceptable though.

3. We pretty much left the flanks open (were we are seriously lacking) Hell Beasley's corpse is trudging up one of the flanks. Luckily Ghana kept pinching in. Just like in 2010 where we ignored the flanks and kept pinching in costing us the game. seriously you could narrowed the pitch 10 yards and not noticed much difference.

4. Howard did well. Dont think his performance was epic though as most of his work consisted of mutari shooting the ball into Row G. The big glaring difference between the 2 squads? Howard is a better than avg prem keeper, Ghana's keeper plys his trade in the Ghanian prem league.

5. Were both excellent. I don't really like either's game. Beckerman is just so defensive. But that is what we needed today.

I am pleased when I see kids wearing footy kits, even if they're Real Madrid kits. I have trouble reconciling people that mock and attack the sport at every turn and then wanting to join in when the USA wins a group match however. I don't feel like that's being a hipster.

Many people in the US are not ignorant to soccer, they are downright hostile towards it. These people then want to jump into the excitement during the world cup. It's them that I have a problem with. Not people that are just paying attention because it's the US and they're supporting their country. I don't have a huge problem with the Olympics fans either.

My issue rests with people that are actively hostile to the sport jumping on the bandwagon. That's not hipster, that's just having a normal reaction to bellish behavior.

Also, many US fans that don't know the sport like Alexei Lalas. These people are clearly wrongheaded and it would be for the best for everyone if they were put down.
I think a lot of the people who are hostile towards soccer on a 3 year 11 month basis are still hostile no matter what the US do. I see people who are more, say, indifferent about it and then they really rachet the celebrations up. The former are easily dismissible; the former shouldn't be shunned. I know no one who hates the BPL or any club league and then pretends to be an analyst when the US plays. It's nice to me when I see people who don't really care about soccer come up to me and ask if I saw the US game, I'm trying to get people interested and others should at least attempt to do the same
