After a nights reflection, I think USA can make it out this group. A draw to Portugal should be enough. I think Germany will take 9 points, so assuming that happens, Ghana are finished. All the USA have to do is lose by less than Portugal did against Germany, and hold Portugal to a draw

I think they are capable of both

Not picking Donovan was justified in last nights performance, USA played as a complete unit an over the hill Donovan would have been a liability.

Not sure of that, Donovan had picked up some pretty good defensive habits over the past couple years and would have provided more of a threat on the counter than Alabama Jo did. Bedoya, who played where Donovan would have also didn't have a good game.

As long as they keep like anything away from the keeper Ghana has the talent to take 6pts in the final 2 matches. Their outfield 10 is better than in 2010. Germany's defense isn't all that rock solid. Its HIGHLY unlikely but possible.

I'm not knocking Howard at all you understand , I think he had a good game and didn't let the team down at all. Did everything right and instilled confidence in his defence.

I didn't think he totally saved our bacon either. If he somehow saved the shot that produced Ghana's goal then yes. He did his job, and did it well, but I wouldn't classify it as immense either as he really didn't have much work to do.

Sorry USA lids, I had to sack off that second half for me bed, just watched it now, dug in and got a result, has to be done sometimes. Great goal from Ghana, slick move and a lethal finish and I thought you were done for. Brooks though! Intriguing group before a ball was kicked, even more so now, Germany will ace it, but how the rest plays out will be the story of the group stage I reckon.
Ghana fans are brilliant, every games a party.

We're a middle of the pack side, blessed with an uncanny ability to knock in corners. Its why despite the (usually) jarg defense and ugly attack we almost always manage to get 1-2 goals. And if we can somehow get enough of an attack to win free kicks we can give anyone a run.

I don't believe that is true, especially given Bradley's and Johansson's performances.

Bradley had an off night but I was very impressed with most of the rest of the squad. Great result obviously, snatching a draw off Portugal would be huge.

I thought Ghana's goal was the best goal of the tourney. Wasn't even mad when they got it.

I saw it happening from the first pass and drunkenly screamed NOOO. A few people glanced at me with confusion before the second pass and goal. I could just see exactly what they were trying and Fabian was 2 steps behind.

I don't watch the TMNT, as most of you know, so this was the first time I actually sat down and watched them.

I realize one game isn't a great sample size, but here's what I saw -

1) Jozy is better for the US than he is in the league. Probably due to the quality of the defense. He's a immensely strong player, and was bullying the Ghana defense. He's still gash, as that doesn't work in the top leagues - it's a alot harder to bully Distin like he was bullying Ghana.

2) Bradley was terrible. I understand it may have been a poor game, but he was the worst player on the pitch. By an absolute mile. If the US lost, it was squarely on his shoulders and his inability to keep the ball. His vision was slow and poor. He consistently chose the wrong pass, and then normally put it off target anyway. He had the ball easily taken off his feet multiple times. His work rate was solid, but he was truly truly terrible.

3) Either the Ghanian right flank is awesome, or the US left flank is an area of serious concern. I tend to believe the latter. Beasley was caught up field over and over again. I don't think the diamond was great for offering him cover. Only the Ghanaian wastefulness let the US off here.

4) Howard played brilliantly. He made the right decision time and again. The goal was something he couldn't be expected to reasonably save. He did a good job repeatedly of choosing when to come off his line and when to stay back - which has never been a strength of Howard. That was good to see.

5) Jones/Beckerman were pretty solid. They, alongside Howard, were the best Americans on the pitch.

Hope for all you real USA fans that the US improves going forward, otherwise I think 3rd in the group is the result.

Oh, and I was reminded again why I can't root for the US - my god has it been annoying seeing tweets and posts about how the USA team is so great. Acting like they've won the world cup. I realize this is not from the genuine fans, but the bandwagoners. And they are awful, awful, Kopites.

2&3 related i think. You've got a LW playing LB and a HM playing LM. Until Beckerman and Besler/Brooks find the right rotation when Beasley goes forward, it's always open. In the early going it looked like this space was a byproduct of the game plan, but as the game progressed it looked like poor play/coordination. Not sure what to think about all that.
