He'd still be better than Johannsson/Altidore. As soon as Dempsey took that knock in the face it was all over attacking wise for the Yanks; he didn't want to know.
Win or not, they have been the most sterile team I've seen in this WC so far. Even Iran and Nigeria were going for it, despite serving up the slop they did.
He had to be. The defence had more holes than a sieve.
Credit to the Americans but, like davek says, a massive own goal leaving Donovan out of that squad. Not even as a like for like replacement, but rather to allow themselves to use Dempsey like Germany used Muller and have Donovan and (LOL) Bradley as the dynamic service in behind.
I don't think Howard was immense as some say, he was very good yes but he did what you would expect of any keeper, commanded his area well and made some decent stops.
Klinsmann doesn't really like Donovan, and I don't think Donovan likes Klinsmann either. Has nothing to do with donovan's ability.

No he was more perfectly adequate. Gyan hit a howitzer and he deflected it right out of the pen box for an excellent save. Ghana by firing long also played right into his hands because shot stopping is what he does best. You beat Howard with free kicks and team play, both of which Ghana was lacking in.
Klinsmann said he didn't give it all in training. However Donovan is 32 and probably knows his body better than anyone. It would have been stupid to run him ragged in training. Plus if you watched the national team play since he dropped the Premadonovan image around 2008 he always worked hard and put in a shift. It was an ego trip by Klinsmann that still might bite him. Espeically with the injuries because Landon is probably no worse than the 5th best outfield player we had.
But that save was what you'd expect of a decent keeper....it was not amazing or a worldy by any stretch of the imagination..... You would have been disappointed if he had not saved it.
Yea its a play you have to make, however he did well not putting the ball right back in front of goal, because it was a hell of a shot. And really that was almost all the work he had. They difference between keepers was the best advantage we had yesterday. Ghana's keeper (granted he plays in the Ghanan premier league) is horrid.
Sorry USA lids, I had to sack off that second half for me bed, just watched it now, dug in and got a result, has to be done sometimes. Great goal from Ghana, slick move and a lethal finish and I thought you were done for. Brooks though! Intriguing group before a ball was kicked, even more so now, Germany will ace it, but how the rest plays out will be the story of the group stage I reckon.

I'm not knocking Howard at all you understand , I think he had a good game and didn't let the team down at all. Did everything right and instilled confidence in his defence.
