It was interesting to watch this last night. Firstly because, as a player, Roberto accepted Brian Flynn's challenge to try and stop Swansea from dropping out of the league for the first time in their history.

Once they'd regrouped they realised that they couldn't compete financially and so they looked for another way to compete and they turned to the untested Martinez to instigate a quick-passing game. I think it was Leon Britton who said that he had to resist the urge to lump it forward. I imagine that Jags knows exactly how he feels!

Saw that. Martinez laughing telling the story how, after they'd gained promotion to the Championship, some fans on the team's tour of Swansea held up a banner saying "Great, but 4-4-2 next season, please".

Nice to see the point being made that the likes of Rodgers coming later only kept things ticking over and that it was Martinez who created the mold. I bet the Kopites were gnashing some teeth watching that.

Yep. Glad to see that point made. I'm sure any reds that have seen this have already written it off as part of the meeja ajenda against them.

I'm sure they'll argue that Rodgers pushed them on and took them to the Premier League. To be fair to him he bought Britton (£44k), Sinclair (£528k), Taylor (Free) and Vorm (£1.5m). He hardly merited a mention in the doco though.

It is rather ignored that rogers tweaked the style again after what was started with Martinez, with mainly a 4-3-3 with a holding midfield player and suprise, suprise they used to concede alot of goals, albeit score more. Soussa then came in ultra defensive with deep possession football, solid at the back but lacked attaking wise. Finally Rodgers came in and mixed the two. A 4-2-3-1, with 2 holding players and ample attackers in front.

Only after he gave Martinez a call to see if it was ok.

I always wanted him. I always thought we have the players that would fit in his system nicely. Many of his troubles came in the winter when the JJB looked like a WWII battlefield. Plus even though some of his players were Scottish coaxed some good looking footie out of them (I will be disapointed if Naismith only scores 15 this year).

I'm the same. I was expecting us to become very leaky defensively but we looked solid against one of the European superpowers with a 19 year old in our backline!

Wigan was awful in the back primarily due to the lack of talent IMO. Wigan is still in the prem if Whelan would have gave him say 2-4M to buy/get on loan a couple decent veteran CBs from the championship. It would have been a marked upgrade in talent b/c I think those guys he was stuck with in the back would have had trouble in league one.

Not too sure about playing a 3-5-3 when the talent on this team lies on the back 4. But its the preseason and its the time to try new things.
