Isn't football a funny game as the cliche goes though, in '04 we definately had a worse team on paper, yet hit our highest prem league finish.
Star team beats a team of stars?

That's true mate.

Although admittedly, the league's a lot stronger now. Billionaires left, right and center. Just not here.

That's true, the quality is a lot stronger throughout the league instead of just a top 4 like in 2004. I still love the guy for the amount of running he did, plus he has something we now miss: pace. bags of it.

He was frankly amazing for us. Marcus Bent was one of the true performers in the Champions League Qualifying Season.

JUST COZ' MY LAST NAME IS BENT. DON'T MEAN IM NO BATTY BOY.

Wow, some real rose-tinted specs in this thread. Massive respect to him for the quote in the OP, but I don't remember all this Bent-love (oo er) being around when he was actually an Everton player. I felt at the time that despite all his running we performed as we did in 04/05 in spite of having such a limited front man, and I think most here would've agreed with me at the time.

I think what we can remember is that even when he didn't score, he always looked like he was trying.
It is about perception. We are watching players who do not appear to be putting in the same work rate that Marcus Bent did, for that we respect him.
Good luck to him. I'd have him in the team this weekend if it were possible. Then again, the ones we have might wake up!

Marcus Bent is ace simply because he did this and I was there:

(that's the second time i've posted that clip in a short space of time! How odd)

Also the look of Saggy Redknapp is classic.

But we can't do the same for Beckford? Shame...

Here's the thing, in our current situation with the form of our current forwards, Beckford is the best option based on attitude. Perhaps a good example for us. Bent was a ten goals a season player with plenty of energy. Beckford will miss loads, but law of averages, he will score goals.
As fans, we are blighted by too many poor performances already this season and so our tolerance has been stretched severly!
All Beckford can do is keep getting into positions and scoring goals will win the fans over.
