2020/21 Marcel Brands

I'd give him a new deal myself; I think with Carlo here that's a relationship taking us in the right direction.

Out of all of Brands' signings the only one that's looked a bust really is Iwobi and mostly because I'm not sure what position he was brought in for. I don't count deals like Delph or Lossl because they're low end of the fees. No DoF in the world has a 100% hit rate. Monchi was terrible at Roma, Rangnick has brought in some bad players, Campos at Lille too, it happens.

The squad regressed from Moyes/Martinez to when Brands took over and the squad we have now, whilst still a work in progress, is so much better than what Martinez had.

To me we definitely need a new keeper (club knows that hence Romero/Olsen), definitely need a new RB, could do with a pacey midfielder and then adequate forward cover (think this can be one player).

It was never going to get fixed in just one Summer.
Not disagreeing with your overall point but what do you mean by the last line? This is his third summer not his first. How many summers does it take to turn 7th and 8th placed finishes into something better? Genuine question by the way, not being funny. It just seems like we're never allowed to think things are moving too slowly, it's always people bedwetting or kneejerking or whatever when they say we're floundering, but nobody ever seems to give a proper explanation of why you shouldn't feel that way.

If the DoF model was being followed at Everton how I believe it should (and does elsewhere) then I agree, it should be sorted or close to sorted after 2-3 seasons. However it doesn't appear to be followed how it really should and we've been building a squad to suit two different managers with two different systems.

This is a legacy issue that should only have happened when transferring over from Walsh to Brands regime.

Bit flabbergasted as to why we bought a 4th choice CB for £20m+ though. Especially considering the lack of depth in the forward line.

I've tried to defend Brands for a long time, but he honestly does not justify a new contract.

Probably because our two senior centrebacks Keane and Mina are average at best so we went out and actually spent decent money on a player who might be able to replace them this season and form a good partnership with Holgate. Tarkowski was going for over 30 million and Arsenal and Leicester spent that type of sum on 19 year olds from France.

Surely this is as much down to the manager if not more?

The manager shouldn't have been left in a position where Cenk Tosun is the back up striker.

Granted, Carlo should be saying that that just isn't acceptable (not publically, but privately, hopefully he is)

You ned to go back and look at the post I was replying to, nothing to do with Carlo.

Good
Digne
Richarlison
James
Allan

Not Good
Mina
Iwobi
Bernard
G'BAMIN (Hasnt kicked a ball for a year and a half, don't bother asking about this)
Kean
Lossl
Delph

Unsure
Gomes
Godfrey
Doucoure
Nkounkou
Olsen

3/4 Good signings he has made were clearly picked by the manager. He did well negotiating those deals.

I am still far from convinced that the DOF model is worthwhile. We are still signing players who aren't contributing to the level of what we are paying them. Delph, Iwobi, Bernard and more are examples of this.

I don't expect him to get every deal 100% right but I'm still not too impressed with his strike rate so far and wouldn't be falling over myself to get him signed to a new contract.

Better than Walsh but its still not been good enough for where we want to be 3 years in to his reign.

Surely Gbamin goes in unsure then by your bracketed work or are you blaming Brands for an injury???

He goes into the Not Good category because he hasn't played in a year and a half.

He's made of glass. Do I think it is entirely Brands' fault? Nope, but that doesn't change the fact that he's made zero contribution and is going down as a waste of money.
