Maradona

If Maradona had played for Barcelona instead of Messi there'd have been no comeback from that scum in the SFs, that's for sure.

The absolute 'kin brass neck on those people who dare to compare Diego with that bottling little dwarf Messi.

Messi made it his mission to win the Champions League this season, publicly declaring it to Barcelona fans at the Nou Camp. The problem was his teammates let him down. Just like Higuain let him down in the 2014 World Cup final when he missed an absolute sitter to put Argentina ahead.

Question, did Maradona show up in the ‘86 World Cup final??

If your response is, “he set up the winner for Burrachaga”, then watch this (as well as Messi’s quality performance note the two defence splitting passes to Alba (3:39) and Suárez (4:18)...also at 1:41 after a run at the defence he puts Coutinho through in his favourite position who shoots tamely). Another day, teammates who finish, that’s three Messi assists.

Messi is a genius, arguably the greatest player ever. You can’t judge the ability of players based on what their teammates do.

The only “difference” between Messi and Maradona is the latter got lucky he had teammates that could finish

The idea that maradona was luckier with team mates than messi is somewhat hard to fathom

Maradona played in an era where a leg breaker wouldn't get a yellow card..... so he often did get them numerous times.

Messi plays in games where if he's tripped up - a yellow card is issued and the opponent has to not bother tackling him.

Messi waits for his team mates to get the ball up to him, maradona was able to drop and dictate play.

Messi is a top player, in the top 7 of all time.... maradona is the best there has been.

Earliest memory watching Maradona was Italia ‘90, a tournament that he played with an injury (believe it was his ankle for which he got injections). Made only one real run of the note (the dribble vs Brazil to set up Caniggia). It was a 6 out of 10 tournament for him as he was clearly hindered.

Having watched Messi for over 10 years on a weekly basis, and having seen footage of Maradona in his prime (the 80s), Messi is the better dribbler. It’s close, as it’s the two greatest at this, but Messi’s ball control is unparalleled. Maradona would often use his body to shield the ball, whereas Messi would already be away from an opponent (often via a feint) so wouldn’t require to use his body to hold a player off. The biggest difference between the two is personality. Messi hasn’t got one, he can’t drive a team on through sheer will power unlike Maradona. While Messi has a great effect on his teammates just through his sheer presence, Maradona had an even greater effect as he had that presence in addition to being the player that drove everyone else on. Even if a game was going really badly (take Argentina’s 4-0 loss to Germany in the 2010 World Cup, or 4-1 loss to France in 2018), Maradona would do something, he’d kick someone, get in the referees face, he wouldn’t take defeat lying down, whereas Messi being so quiet/lacking in personality you would barely see any reaction.

Messi more naturally talented, but Maradona edges it overall through his presence/effect on the team.
Nice to read a reasoned post in this dull debate for a change.

He was brilliant against Liverpool but the other 10 players bottled it. No player can carry 10 yellow bellies on their back, even Messi. Maradona's Argentina team mates may have been average but they had balls.

Maradona over Messi for me, I'd even put a prime Ronaldinho above Messi.

NEA.
Given that prime Ronaldinho, having just won the FIFA player of the year, said of 18 year old Messi, “I'm not even the best at Barca”, hardly.

Precisely.

If your teammates are bobbins there ain’t a lot you can do. The worst ever case of greatness being surrounded by dregs had to be either George Best with Northerm Ireland, or George Weah with Liberia.

The ‘86 Argie team that Maradona “carried” to a World Cup, a tournament he “won on his own”...don’t recall him morphing into Jorge Valdano or Jorge Burruchaga to coolly slot home two goals in the final (neither of which Maradona had any role in). The myth still gets peddled though. The 2014 Argie team that had the biggest bottle job in Gonzalo Higuain missing sitters, one of which when clean through...clearly that’s Messi’s fault, and gives Maradona the edge.

Not just his misses, the idiot runs offside instead of holding his run, simple tap in otherwise.

Gerrard said Joe Cole was better than Messi, so I take what footballers say with a pinch of salt.

I pay no heed to Messi fanboys, they are like kopites in their unflattering adoration.

Probably the best ever. No questions he dragged a bang average Argentina side to a World Cup and dragged a bang average Napoli side to the league title. Would love to have seen Messi or CR attempt to do that.

Err, in the entirety of his time at Napoli, he never once made less than 26 games per season, with an average of 37 games per season. Indeed, for the first 6 seasons at Napoli, he missed 8 league games in that entire time, despite him apparently having his leg broken every other week by thuggish defenders. It's yet another myth that shatters when exposed to reality.
