Never a good time to protest against racsism it will upset the chattering keyboard classes.
Most people aren't saying that and I would suspect that a large proportion the population have a minimum of sympathy for the cause if not actual support.

The issue is that we have a highly infectious and deadly virus that is currently prominent and in some areas, before the these protests, the r0 is rising.

Talking hypothetically, if say 100 - 500 people died as a consequence of these protests would it be acceptable or worth it? What if the figures were higher?

Admittedly, I'm talking arbitrary numbers and I really hope nobody does, but as I've said numerous times this is a balancing act between two deadly things.

If we are going to have protests then fine, but it's not unreasonable to consider that they should socially distance and that they consider any said consequences.

It's not semantics, at all. The reality of racism and how a virus impacts a certain demographic based on a variety of factors (many non-human) are entirely different.

Is Sickle cell racist? Is COVID-19 ageigst or sexist towards men? I am all for protesting against racism, but you're (intentionally or unintentionally) blurring the lines.

It isn't racist to express a concern regarding how any major protest or gathering (like on the beaches etc.) may have a detrimental impact on wider health.
That 'scorched earth policy' is an dindulgence that the majority of them can withstand: they are young and will survive any contact with the virus. Older, vulnerable people who come into contact with any virus they spread, however, either wont survive it or will have their health destroyed because of it.

Stop being obtuse. These marches are unforgivable in the context we're now in.

Good to know some baby boomers on the right side of the fight...

"John McAllister, 71, tore down black bin bags used to hide the Colston statue to denounce it in front of fellow protesters"

And us younger ones...

Racism has killed many more than this virus, probably take some years to even come close. And yet its a community most at risk who are out protesting, shows they have a little more than minimum of concern as we all should have.

You think the far left don't take a stand against the class system and wealth divide ?

What do you think Corbyn tried to do for the past few years ? or Bernie in the US ?

Do you think the 'moderate/centre left' and the 'right' are more concerned about wealth inequality ? If so please explain how you've come to this conclusion. To my eyes it seems you've gone after the one side of the political spectrum who have actually been pro active about wealth inequality whilst giving the people who have ignored it for decades a free pass.

When I refer to the left I do so in terms of the politicans and blue tick twitter academic types - I largely havent an issue with your average bloke on the street who votes labour for example.

Sadly the left in the UK over recent years has been hijacked by upper middle class "intellectuals" who have no idea of the reality of life as a working class white person (especially in the north).

I get the impression for alot in the current left they view the working class as an annoyance - a bunch of uneducated racist Neanderthals which is why large pockets of the working class have drifted to the right and the Tories - I mean how bad has it gotten that people think kin Nigel Farage is the man of the people???

Thats ultimately the lefts failure - people like Milliband, Corbyn - folk who have no idea of what its like for a single mother growing up in a northern council estate pushing a version of the left that caters largely to middle class whites who think they are working class & the continued seperation and playing off of whites and minorities rather than the uniting of them.

I havent voted in a while mate and wont do until politics in this country drastically improves. Corbyn and Johnson - what a choice!

I haven't said otherwise, but more deaths is not something anybody wants. Like I said earlier, it's their own individual decision whether to protest or not.

However, they also have to consider the wider implications of society who they may come across, who haven't got the choice. It's not a matter of us versus them.

Will everyone who took part, regardless of their age or gender or ethnicity, be socially isolating afterwards? I'd say the same about people who go the beach etc.

You also have to consider the view of the BAME community, it is very much us versus them. Before they even get to school, parents have to enlighten their children of the nuances of their position in the UK...

I suspect they will isolate as much as those people who went to the beaches... Should there be a difference?

Just like one black person speaks for all black people.

One person trying to burn a flag is all BLM.
I haven't seen anybody say or insinuate this (although the chances are I have that type of poster on ignore).

But do you not think that the BLM should be distancing themselves from that type of behaviour?

The far left - they are no friends of the working class.

If they want to help BAME people then unite people and take a stand to the class system and wealth divide in this country.

Poverty is colour blind - you have white, black, asian folk dying of poverty and living in squalor whilst all the far left and middle class care about is social media protests and playing the us against them card.

People need to wisen up and realise the elite on both the left and right are taking the average joe for a ride.

100%

It's no surprise as we're a nation under a monarchy, elite, class divide, and have been ruled under that pretense by a conservative party since the majority of the 19th Century.

It won't change. All you can do is work within it and together.

'When I refer to the left, I cherry pick people who annoy me and use it as a catch all for them'

Which members of the Labour Party do you think view the working class an annoyance or who have no idea what it's like to be working class?

And you know Corbyn isn't your choice unless you live in Islington?

There are many on the left (mainly working class) who genuinely mean well and want to make society better who I support fully.

However those on the fringe and the elite of the ideology have no intention in doing so and are happier pitting people against each other whilst continuing to profit of it.

Most people on the right are working class too.

They just don't realize it...
