I'm pretty sure this is not true amongst Bristolians when seeing that statue. It is routinely taught in schools telling of the pain caused.

Bristols history, (like many port based Cities), is certainly not air brushed. Most are well aware that the beautiful city was financed via slaves, sherry, and tobacco. In the main.

The modern legacy, whilst not celebrated, is still tangible.

And any visitor will attest to the fact that we dont all gather around a statue every week and have a party. Which we cant do now anyrate.

Tis a smashing place, full of folk from all over the globe, with, to my knowledge, little, if any, racial tensions.

Frankly, I don’t care if they get wound up or not.

That's fine mate but the universal truth is for an action there is an equal and opposite one. The hearts and minds of the people that did this have already been won, it's the others that still hold racist views that may see this as a call to arms that I'm concerned with. It looks like a divide is already appearing and that is disappointing. There is plenty of ways that this could have peacefully happened without upsetting anyone (or hardly anyone) without today's 'for show' event.

Bit of a perfect storm I guess. White nationalists marching about with guns whilst authorities say nothing. The government doing nothing to quell matters. The incident itself was extremely barbaric. People losing their jobs.
As long as racial inequalities exist, one incident can always light the touch paper.

My concern with removing statutes and trying to drag up historical actions of others is that it removes the possibility for improvement, which if people don't accept or acknowledge, makes your efforts completely pointless.
