Fighting nazism was a by-product of the fight to retain an Empire for Churchill. Many others in the elite at the time took the view the Empire could be maintained by accomodating Germany. His most valuable input was recognising that you cant do deals with an industrial scale killing machine.
Churchill was an imperialist and he openly used notions of "Aryan supremacy" to justify it.
I don't disagree with you Dave. There's little doubt that empire was a key point to Churchill. I would add two cavaets though;
1) A lot of ordinary working class people supported the war, for broadly anti-fascist reasons. To a degree Churchill understood that.His reasoning was not the same as ordinary people's reasoning.
2) While Churchill showed racist views, and did some reprehensible things, he was not a fascist. It is important to distinguish between the two. Fascism is not extreme racism. It is has a fundamentally different operation and is really about smashing progressive people. There are certainly overlaps, but they are still distinctive categories.
In this instance though, I won't betaking lectures on British history and respecting those who died in wars by listening to a group of people who make Nazi salutes.
