Current Affairs Liz Truss

That might play a part, but they also seemingly have a hard on for Braverman and Badenoch, so think the 'brown argument' might not be quite a factor here.

Have a look at the Telegraph website. It demonstrates the sort of off kilter niche interests the Tories have which sits firmly with what Truss comes out with. It caters for that particular audience, described as a de facto 'house journal' in some quarters.

172k seemingly crackpot members dictating which posturing bag of wind got to be in charge. Twice.
They like that they parrot their crazy, right-wing nonsense and they believe it provides some credibility to their views. "Look. Even an Asian says there's too many immigrants!".

I doubt they'd ever vote for them to lead the Tory party, though.

This right wing paranoid thinking, once it takes hold in a person, it seems to re-programme them like a computer virus. It's actually extremely scary. Hard to believe this is the same woman who said no so long ago that she didn't want her daughters growing up in a Britain that was outside the EU.

I think it just hits different when the person of colour is in the ultimate leadership position rather than still being 'part of the team'.

Hence the rage that Obama unlocked in the American Right. Before that, you could have as many Senators, Governors, Supreme Court Justices etc as you like being non-white, but ultimately they all fell under the purview of a white man in the Oval Office, so there was a 'natural order' being maintained, if you're thinking along racist lines.

Hence you get bizarre things like Trump hiring an actor to play Obama coming in for his 'performance review' just so Trump could play out a fantasy of 'firing' him - because to people in Trump's world it's inconceivable that a black man (or any other person of colour) could be in a position of authority over them.

So Rishi as Chancellor, spending the cash where Boris wants it spent? That's fine with the membership. Rishi standing for leadership, and thus PM, himself? Suddenly there's a bit of a wobble in his support. I might be wrong, but I suspect it's a wall any BAME Tory MP will run up against for a while yet.

I've given you the raised eyebrow their for two reasons.

1) comparing US and UK politics and social history isn't quite comparing apples and oranges, especially on matters of race!
2) whilst if not rule out skim colour/ethnicity as a factor, I think its a reductionist to view it as a sole or defining factor and ignores the tumultuous last few years in the UK as well as the Conservative Party itself.

I'm loathe to defend these bell ends though, so I'll leave it there. They're all different shades of arsehole, ultimately.

TBF Sunak being not white is almost certainly not an issue for the vast majority of the Tory membership. What counts more in that respect is that there are entire networks (of media, of people, and online) set up and funded to boost what is now the opposition to Sunak. As recent Tory PMs go, he is probably the best of everyone from Cameron onwards and certainly has the most positive achievements. It is just a shame he doesnt have the balls to do to his internal opposition what Johnson did.

What a hateful creature she is. Yes, there are a group of people who refuse to do what’s right by the country because they are enriching themselves at our expense. Liz Truss is one of those people, admittedly one of the most mentally ill of those people, and her whole ilk should be cast into the bin of history.
To be fair, I have to admit that the UK is a very civilised country. Anywhere else and she’d be hung from the nearest lamppost.
