Liam Walsh

Bit of Groundhog Day here as we had this discussion earlier in the week. Apparently the source is The S** so probabably half true, I.e Bristol City want him and have approached us. So a decision to be made and I could only envisage one scenario of him going.
Walsh has been one of our age group stand out players for the past few seasons, and last time I saw him he was MoM in the 3-0 away win at Chelsea U23s. Given that Joe Williams and now Callum Connolly are holding their own as midfielders in the Championship you’d have to say that, by comparison, he’s at least a good Championship player.

What we haven’t seen is whether he can cut it at PL level. And on that basis I’d hold on to him al least until the summer . He’s definitely got something , we just need to assess if it’s PL material and sometimes you don’t know that until he plays at that level. Davies excelled above U23s level when he got his chance, and Beni Benimgime actually looked better with more time in his first team games than he’s done recently with the u 23s. £1 mill is nothing , we probably payed that or close to it for Denis Adeniran, so it seems crazy to give away someone until we,re certain of his PL potential.

If he wants to go for whatever reason then that scenario changes things , if not keep him longer and tell him how he can prove himself.
Not sure exactly what the rush is, Osman didn’t break in until he was a few years older than Walsh. I would only move this lad on if I absolutely had to and I’d have a buyback clause at a minimum. Let’s face it apart from the FA cup the rest of the seasons a wash out. I see no reason not to give him some game time in the Premier League.

It would be sad if Liam leaves without ever having had an opportunity to show what he could do in the 1st team. He's had a frustrating year with injuries at crucial times meaning he missed out on u20 World Cup and a 1st team opportunity when Koeman promoted Davies, and then that ill-fated loan to basket case Birmingham. Whenever I saw him and Davies playing for the u23s he looked the classier of the two and, as Unsworth said, he could run games, something Davies couldn't do despite his more physical attributes.

I'm sure Liam must feel frustrated that both Davies and Beni have leapt ahead of him in the pecking order through no fault of his own and it could well be that he fancies a move; certainly more u23 football is the last thing he needs if he is to develop into the player we all hope he becomes. Allardyce would most likely never have seen him play so would be relying on advice from the likes of Unsworth as to whether Liam has a future here. If he's not going to be involved with the 1st team from January then let him go, preferably on loan but if sold, especially for a paltry £1 million, then there has to be a buy back clause. But this is Everton so I'm not holding my breath.

I am not sure I remember any player that has left us at about 20 years of age that has really come back o haunt us. A few have gone on to play in the Premiership but not so well that we want to bring them back to Everton.
Some of these lads need to move on for the sake of their careers as they might never have been given the chance at Goodison.
I wonder how things would have turned out for Jon Joe Kenny if Seamus had not broken his leg ?

We don't miss Ryan Ledson is all I'm saying.

...some will point to Dier and Mustafi but their circumstances was different. I agree that very few come back to this level but if one does then good luck to him. Money isn’t everything, but let’s not forget the likes of Walsh will be earning a very healthy living. He’ll get 10% of any transfer fee, a signing on sum and a very pleasant contract at Bristol. He’ll be delighted to move on.

Ledson left summer 2016 and we've not seen a hint of Walsh around the first team? Has that really covered the Ledson gap?
Wasn’t just Walsh who the club thought was better than Ledson. Walsh has been unlucky, he was doing very well on loan to Yeovil when the opportunity came for Davies. Then we were apparently holding out for him to go on loan to a championship club when we most probably should have let him go to Bolton. Then if he hadn’t of gone to Birmingham he would have got some game time under Unsworth.

If we sell Walsh we won't miss him with Beni and Adeniran already at the club then if we go by your logic (:

We simply can't keep every young player at the club, when they get to a certain age and there is no obvious path for them to get into the first team then it is best for all that they go somewhere and get first team football. We will probably have a % on any future sale of the player and I think all we can do is wish him well.

From what i have seen , and heard if we do sell this lad we need a buy back clause more than anything!

Of all our youngsters he was the one I was most excited about. But he needs to leave for the sake of his own career. He's at the age where he needs to be playing as much as possible. Selling him with a buyback option would be my preference
