Leighton Baines

Seems daft that they run a story at the same price we have already rejected. We'd still get at least £10m for him in the summer so hold out if we are in the top 6 at christmas and see what happens. Would be tempted to sell him but to anyone but them.

January could be the time when we offer him a new contract. Martinez seems keen to keep him playing football and my worrying about that side of things. It will get sorted and the newspapers will keep printing stories about him but you've got to remember its speculation and not direct from either club.

If he doesn't want to sign a new contract just sell him. £15m for a 29 year old with little time left on his contract is a decent fee. We could sign a younger left back for that or even promote Oviedo and put that £15m with the other £15m that we made and sign Lukaku. (Im sure none of this will happen and the money we made from summer will already be lost in our financial black hole)

If its not Barkley being touted round by the papers, it Baines, then its Barkley, then back to Baines again!! So frustrating considering we've been close (ish) to breaking the top four for a few seasons. This year its more open than usual so lets just keep Baines this season and see where it takes us. He's got about 4 more seasons at the top of his game. If he leave at the end of his contract (albeit for free) at least we'd have got this and next season out of him first. I know money talks, but this lad's top quality all day long. No brainer for me - we keep him for as long as we can.

Some small time talk here, we're Everton we need to keep the best players playing for us, you can't get a better left-back than Baines. We are in a battle for Champions League/title(?) right now and if we still are in January- which I think we will be, it would be criminal to even consider selling him no matter what he wants and with him actually being a blue born and raised in Liverpool, I really don't see why he would be so desperate to go when we're in such a position mid-season. We need him and shouldn't sell as unlike Fellaini, Lescott, Arteta, he is irreplaceable.

I would be devastated to see Baines go. he is a model professional and a great bloke too.

But I do wonder if the lack of contract talks is due to Everton? He will be able to command 80k+ a week which will make him the top earner. In todays market that is the going rate for an England regular who is the best in his position.
His age means that this will be his last mega deal so he needs to get the right deal for his long-term career.
I don't think he is as important a player in Martinez' Everton as he was in Moyes'. Even after the 2 utter wonder strikes against West Ham Martinez commented that he preferred to win a game through flowing football than via set pieces.
I don't think the overlapping and bombing the box play of Seamus and Leighton has been evident or as required as previous season's.

The most important players in our new set-up appear to be where Barry/McCarthy operate. No coincidence that we have won every game that Barry has started. I guess the key for our future success is finding the long-term replacement for Gareth Barry.

Everyone is replaceable. We are Everton NOT Baines FC. One day he will leave by being sold or getting too old.

I would be happy to receive £15m for him if we got Bertrand. I think he would be a very good replacement, he's young-ish, English and should cost around £5-7 million which would leave us money for Bruno Martin Indi to replace Distin. If that was to happen Baines FC, I mean Everton FC would be stronger

Gosling was a kid, Baines is our best player

What if, Baines and his agent have said we want a new contract but we want to be paid what Felli was offered 75k per week and the club are not willing to pay it. Or, they are stalling on offering it for as long as possible to save a few quid.

Don't be quick to assume its the players fault all the time.
