Leighton Baines

Baines has been off form, maybe getting the contract situation out of the way will help. He'd have to be a lot worse and for a lot longer for me to start saying he is playing "shyte" as some above say.

Also Ste okay we get it, you think diving is okay because everybody does it. Most people think it isn't. It's not a proven way to win titles, no more so than being good at playing an offside trap....it's just one part of the game.

You see BHeader, in my opinion, playing ahead of Oviedo could potentially cost us our chance of playing in Europe next season...now I know that is a biggish statement, because there are lots of if and buts attached to it, but if Baines continues in this lethargic fashion, and eventually you say, you know, Baines is Shyte and Oviedo should be playing, our chance of Europe will definitely be Gone...I like Baines as much as you, but if he does not pull his finger out of his arse soon, his finger and his arse should be benched...

That was a clear dive by Baines and I was disappointed in him for that. There was a little contact with the shoulder and arm of the the defender but it wasn't near enough to take Baines down.

Leighton's form has been below his usual high standards this year. His game against West Brom was one of the worst I've seen him play. He's not awful by any stretch but he seems to be a bit off for whatever reason.

It's probably hard for Martinez to bench Baines right now with his impending contract. Oviedo should be starting at left back in the cup tie. Hopefully he puts in a great shift and forces Martinez to consider him. I'm wondering who would be the right back. Stones? Oviedo didn't look too bad playing on the right wing yesterday. Maybe he can be used at right back while Coleman is out.

We will have to disagree on his actual play so far, because for me he has been below par but not as bad as some are saying. He was just fine in the last game and last night the whole team were off. If we don't make Europe I personally think it would be a stretch to point to Baines replacing Oviedo in the team.

In a game like last night he has to play, as without Pienaar and Barkley he could've been the only one to drive us forward. He didn't, but thats why he is selected out there.

I think people look too hard sometimes for big problems and reasons for poor games sometimes. Even the best teams, and the best players, have poor games.

I dont see the logic in keeping Baines. Are we really a club who can afford to bust the bank to keep a 29 year old on a long term megabucks contract?? A left back can only have so much influence on a game and I think we played our best football of the season when Baines was injured. When he plays we go through him too often and it ends up with us becoming predictable and playing worse football. Surely if we can get something like 12 million for him now at the age of 29 it must make more sense than keeping him on a huge contract??? I mean I would actually drop him on current form as I would feel more confident with Oviedo in the team.

This was my thinking. Roberto calling him "more than a footballer, he's an icon" seems a bit OTT to me.

The best clubs, the ones who win stuff, know when to sell their most prized assets. Fergie sold Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Stam and many others at their peak. He did it to progress the club forward.

We havent won anything in just under 19 years. I think we should aim to start being a winning club again FIRST before we sell prized assets after a short bit of poor form.

Such an opinion might be seen as somewhat heretical around these parts, but I for one agree. All this 'Baines is an icon, an Everton talisman' etc etc subordinates rational football thinking to emotion/sentimentality.

He's been off-form all season. That's over 20 games now. He may never recover the dynamic form of previous seasons. Pienaar, who brings out the best of him, is the wrong side of 30 and his best days also seem behind him.

A player who needs another player in the team to play well is not indispensable.

While Baines has been below his usual high standards for the most part this season, this is still a fairly small blip compared to his incredible body of work for Everton. I'm hoping that he turns this around once his contract gets settled. It's not like he's old by any stretch.

This from today has been missed in the general meltdown that's been going on:

Not having his best season but he's still a very good LB. Plays almost every minute and doesn't get injured much. Plus is an excellent free kick taker and never misses a pen. Handled the transfer window in the summer with total class.

With Oviedo we have depth there so wouldn't be too arsed if we sell him provided its over the 10M mark and we could get a striker out of it. However if we offer him say 60-70M/week and he wants to stay good. I'll never have a problem with Everton fielding one of the best LBs in the prem.

60/70m a week?
