Leighton Baines

Glad it seems to be a toe issue and not a metatarsal. A broken toe shouldn't keep him out for stupidly long. 6 weeks max for a broken toe isn't it, usually? And that would probably be the worst case scenario at this stage.

6 weeks would put it as his last game for the club today possibly then....

If he is out I'd like to see Oviedo given a little run. At least it would give a clear indication whether he is good or not

....I'm not convinced with Oviedo, but agree that he's the natural replacement. Much prefer him than square pegs in round holes, e.g. Distin or Stones at LB. Alcaraz might be a more viable alternative, but I'm genuinely unsure of his versatility in that position.

Barry slotted in there nicely and I've been dieing to see the Barry MCCarthy partnership broken up just to see what we can do without it. Hey presto we looked boss going forward.

I agree mate, it was nice to see we could cope without the Barry/McCarthy partnership in the centre. But should Baines leave in January (which I don't think he will personally) we need a replacement. We might as well see if Oviedo or Garbutt could handle it? I personally like what I've seen of Oviedo so far, plus Baines as a left back hasn't been as influential under Martinez as he was under Moyes, which makes for a little less pressure for a replacement

...not for me. I'm not a fan of making multiple changes when one will do. Barry and McCarthy are settled, I wouldn't break them up for LB cover.

...as I said, I'm not convinced with Oviedo but he was bought as back up and is the natural replacement. If you start moving Centre Backs or Midfielders it means changing the established balance of the side for one position.
The established partnership of McCarthy and Barry (for me at least) hasn't been too fruitful in recent weeks. When Barry went to left back and Barkley dropped in we started to open Liverpool up. I'm all for change now there is an excuse for it. Oviedo really isn't the best option. If I'm honest if it's required Distin would be better going to left back rather than Oviedo. Martinez obviously doesn't rate the lad as he rarely make the bench

Looks like Baines will eventually sign a new contract, which I think is positive, the lad is Everton through and through.
His kids are Everton fans and so his he.

The contract is still being sorted out, but I've been told that he will sign a new one at some point.

So all this nonsense about him leaving in January for definite, is just pure speculation at best, he doesn't want to leave and is settled.
