Leighton Baines

So are you saying Martinez didn't say what has been quoted, as the journo who I read it off on twitter is very decent and is a blue so wouldn't lie.

He mentions this in today's PC. Doesn't make too much of it... when asked if he was in talks with Leighton he replies.. "no... not at the moment"

There is a difference between the quote and Baines being shipped off to United on the cheap though surely? The likelihood is, we havent approached Baines about a contract nor are we too concerned about any approach.

...I did post that we should brace ourselves for a possible move in the next 12 months and that if Baines does go he will try and ensure the move is conducted in the right way. I still think this might be the case.

If Baines was going to go it would've happened in the summer. He will be offered a new deal in time, just because it hasn't happened three weeks after the window closed doesn't mean anything negative. Our gaffer said its time to focus on the games now and contract talks will happen when need be. Everybody chill because everything is fine.

Why would we be in such a rush to extend his deal? We've gone public stating our intentions to talk to him, but never was it said that we would be doing so straight after the window has closed.

You can see in the press conferences that Roberto is at pains to keep the questions and answers focused around the games and nothing else.

The question was, 'are there any talks planned', to which he replied, 'no'. We can speculate all day long, but its likely that by definition the talks have not been planned and are not in the diary, but again, we intend to do so at some point.

I think Roberto just wants everything to settle down for a bit, thats all. If he goes, he goes, and we will all wish him well. He deserves success, and footballers careers are extremely short. Hes got 6/7 years left probably, especially with his dodgy ankle. If he gets the chance to go, win titles, play CL and cement the number 3 shirt for England then good on him.

Because lets be honest, whats he got going for him with us? A great club which im sure he loves, but career wise hes got a less than outside shot at top 4. Its likely we will finish 6-8th and it will have been a good season for us, the first with the new style.

Do what makes you happy Bainesy lar!

anyone else think he looked a tad reserved on saturday? Did get over the half way line much, and I cant remember a single trademark Baines cross.

Throw into that a quite awkward interview on Everton tv and to me it would seem he has been truly unsettled. Just my opinion like.

Anyone else notice any of the above?

I think it's because of the world cup selection issue. The most common thing I hear in comparing Cole and Baines is that Cole is a better defender. Well on Saturday Baines was perfect defensively, made a few crucial tackles, and I can't remember who it was he completely muscled off the ball in the box (someone twice his size, Luiz maybe?). We call know he can bomb forward, he needs to demonstrate his strengths as a defender and he did just that.

As for the contract nonsense, is his contract up in 2015?

This is an excellent and insightful point lad!

and yeah there is no rush with the contract stuff from a deal length point of view, I think most peeps believe that if he signs a new deal he will be out of Utd clutches forever...

It is likely that where we are as a team/how we are performing will influence matters hugely

Everybody needs to read this and calm down.
