who is in contention for best in the world then ?baines, cole..i dont really know other left backs, my football knowledge outside the premiership is very poor, saying that my knowledge of the premiership is mediocre

The only comparable fullbacks ability-wise are those who play for the kind of sides that dominate so much, they're almost wingers. I'm thinking Alves, Marcelo etc.

It's very tough to compare them really. I know Baines gets forward a lot but he is still a fullback. He puts a big defensive shift in and doesn't camp out in the opponent's half.

I find it hard to compare Lahm to left backs or right backs because he's basically both, and a bit of an anomaly. He's a truly outstanding footballer.
