I think ‘official’ attendances were also lower than the actual reality - but football was in the doldrums until the Prem revamp following Italia ‘90.

The moment they began to gentrify football.

I'm not lying when I say me and my mate pretty much had the whole of the lower bullens to ourselves that day. I must have moved seats about 15 times lol

The paddock was sit anywhere back then to, you could move towards the goal we were attacking in each half, always half empty.

I had a season ticket in the nineties. There was no waiting list and they were very affordable. The footy was utterly terrible, however!

Football was on its backside back then.
Even the success that lot had never meant lock outs.
Only ticket games were to stop trouble iirc.

Ive even heard of young people following Everton because they actually want to go to a match rather than watch one on the TV.

I think that helped us a lot. Young fans got into the habit of enjoying going the match when could. I think a slight concern now is that it could go the other way. There's a higher season ticket ceiling now than then meaning it'll be harder for more fans to pick up that bug of going.

I remember when about 3000 people were at Selhurst for us versus Wimbledon.

I expect to pay more for my season ticket in the new stadium. I'm quite happy to do that. But it is really important that we continue to offer cheaper tickets for younger fans.

Watching a few clips on YT of Goodison in the late 80's early 90's. From the back end of the great days up to the Beardsley/Ablett/MoJo days.
Very striking how small the crowds were!
Empty spaces every where. Avg crowds of 27-29,000.

Anyone here of that vintage know why that was??
If anything I'd say we were a lot bigger in the city than we are today. Seems very odd?

Recession.
There were massive redundancies in the Thatcher years and Merseyside in particular was deliberately targeted for a 'managed decline'
Football takes a back seat when you're struggling to put food on the table. (something that people need to bear in mind when crying out for 70,000 seater stadiums in these unstable times)

I remember an early 70's League cup game against Noriwch lost 1-0 think they scored after about 14 seconds and sure there was only about 13/14,000 there.

Not especially at Everton but generally the game going experience wasn’t always pleasant and the crowds were pretty much 18-40 year old men. Very few wives and kids.
