yes sexism effectively was ended with the release of the first alien film
I think what he means is that some of the acclaim the film got came from a false position- the notion that there aren't strong female characters in films, hence why he used Ripley as an example. He could have also used Sarah Connor, Clarice Starling, my favourite Lisbeth Salander and many many more.
Nothing wrong at all with any character so long as it's well written and feels authentic (even Amazonian warriors, I quite enjoyed Wonder Woman), but some of the obvious social politicking in films can hurt them- look no further than serious reviews that criticise the lack of representation in films like Dunkirk (yes seriously), people actually taking the Bechdel test seriously and one of the best examples in recent times, the Ghostbusters remake. Painfully unfunny with awful characters. Compare that to Bridesmaids by the same director and characters that felt real and that's where the problem lies. Nothing wrong with taking a new spin on things if it's actually for a purpose and done with some quality- the version of The Beguiled that came out this year is a great counterpoint to the version with Clint Eastwood from the 70's.
The fact is shoving people in for the sake of diversity when it's not true to the story or necessary hurts any film as the creative process behind the film is not based on actual imagination and ideas, its based on ticking boxes to avoid a negative buzzfeed review. Now, it's quite clear that all Hollywood films could be seen to be just "ticking boxes", but I'd like to believe there's still a lot of good stuff out there. There's been plenty of it this year.
