Last Film You Watched

sci fi binge continues..

Battleship - as far as cheesy action flicks go, its very average but not terrible. Decent sc-fi in it though. Aliens are weirdly dumb. Neat scene using sunlight at one point though. The cheesiness detracts from it. Felt like the producers weren't committed to the sci-fi enough and had to add a lot of cheap action crap and tropes. Could have been better.

Total Recall (1990) - a lot of cheap/wrong sci-fi but 1990 was before my time so it was probably par for the course back then. They got video calling right though. Some really stupid scenes late on -- borderline parody. Arnie is good at least.

Total Recall (2012) - I like the post-apocalyptic earth setting better than the martian setting of the original. The idea of 'The Fall' is really neat - though kind of unexplained why they don't just use planes when they clearly use them in toxic air later in the movie. I really didn't like that they changed some things for the better but kept many(/all?) of the same characters which is just weird. Casting really lets it down imo, especially the two opposing leaders. Kate Beckinsale though

Running out of sci fi at this point. Looking for the more obscure/forgotten titles now.

Not my usual thing but available on Amazon Prime so I gave it a watch. Like every whodunnit it has a fab cast, an ailing millionaire and a family full of hangers-on all after a big inheritance. An enjoyable film if you go with the flow ...
Just watched this tonight. Been wanting to see it for ages and was worth the wait.

Also saw Upgrade finally last night. Very good. Weirdly reminded me of Venom, poss due to somewhat similar theme/action scenes, and poss due to discount Tom Hardy! :o :D

The Nightingale ( Netflix but not one of their films )

Very good film, but unrelentingly bleak throughout the whole film, with not one light moment all the way through.

Set in the early 19th century on a penal colony in Tasmania, a young Irish female convict, with the help of a young Aboriginal tracker, seeks vengeance on a British army officer and his men for raping her and killing her husband and infant child.

Very well acted and beautifully filmed
on location, but it’s like the visual equivalent of an extended Leonard Cohen album, as it’s that bleak.

You need to be ready to watch this and in the right mood too !

I like Viking stuff, ever since seeing the Kirk Douglas film when I was a kid,I like a bit of sword and sorcery, myths and legends type stuff,I usually watch that kind of stuff as a break from the bleak stuff that makes up most of my viewing
Anyway last night flicking through films "Viking Destiny" caught my eye,the blurb made it sound like my type of thing, unfortunately I didnt notice a warning sign of Will Mellor being one of the cast, the script was awful, dialects all over the place, fight scenes as bad as anything I have ever witnessed,Will Mellor was basically playing "2 pints of mead and a pillage", its rare I dont finish a film no matter what, but this was so awful it wasnt even amusingly bad, avoid at all costs

I loved it - She is tremendous in it as well, should have been Oscar nominated

Without a doubt she deserved an award, maybe it was due to it being a difficult watch she didn’t gain the recognition ?

The opening 15 mins were as hard as anything I’ve had to watch for a long time !

Yep it's brutal - and you're probably right

Especially when you consider that the award went to Renee Zellweger portraying Judy Garland - About as Vanilla an Oscar decision as you're ever likely to see

Speaking of Arnie, have you tried Running Man?

Also, just to make sure you've ticked all these boxes

The Thing
Sunshine
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (I really liked the Donald Sutherland/Jeff Goldblum one, haven't seen the original)
Event Horizon
12 Monkeys
Moon
Arrival
In the Mouth of Madness (More horror but I really liked it)
Metropolis
The Warriors

7500 - JGL is good value in this one, no silly hollywood heroics and I'd put it closer to (but not as good as) 'United 93' than something like 'Non-Stop'. Usually I find the single setting concept very off-putting, but I found this engaging enough to completely forget about it.

Feels like they had a lot of realism consultants around from a technical perspective, but some minor plot set-ups did feel a little contrived.

7/10

I think it got a lot of walkouts doing the festival season and the director had to explain why the scenes were included. A bit weird.

Great film.

Upgrade added to Netflix (think it's a recent addition), meant to be good, gonna check it out tonight.
Looked at that today, good reviews and Logan Marshall who plays the lead is usually good too.
Got 30 minutes of it left to watch

Lol.

You’re right, it’s a lad who looks like him - Johnathan Long ;)
Justin Long isn't it??
