Last Film You Watched

I had the same discussion about horror films with my mate the other night in the pub.

The last decent proper scary film for me was Sinister.

Imo the problem is that every genre has been done to death and with the access to the interweb, kids have become desensitised to what we`d have classed as " scary " in days gone by. So studios won`t take a risk on anything new for the fear of it tanking at the box office.

The next proper scary film will probably come from abroad and be subtitled.

Have you seen A Serbian Film? Extremely disturbing and scary. I heartily recommend anybody watch it. Once. You'll never want to see it a second time.

I've seen it - It is disturbing but I wouldn't call it 'scary'. It's a horrificly nasty, mean-spirited little film that sets out to offend rather than chill. Martyrs is more effective at staying with you after the credits roll.

I guess horror is like comedy - One mans meat is another mans poison. The films which have recently freaked me out (The Witch, The Babadook etc) wouldn't do anything for some people.

Agree on both points. While Martyrs is a tough, brutal film to sit through, it did stay with me for some time afterwards, as its central concept is very disturbing; while I'd struggle to recommend it, it certainly had a strange power once you got beyond the gore. A Serbian Film, on the other hand, was just an extreme button-pushing exercise, albeit one with some technical competence; I remember binning the disc after watching it as I didn't feel very comfortable having it in the house!

Some interesting shouts re: recent horror... in the past 5 years or so, I think the one I've liked the most is It Follows. I also liked the new Suspiria, even if it is such a different film from the original.

Ahh, I forgot about It Follows - Definitely my kind of horror. The Invisible Man actually shares a little bit of a similar style with it - The long, lingering shots suggesting that something is just about to happen, the creepiness that makes you look at every corner of the screen for a flicker of movement.

I think I may have mentioned something about it before, but your username provides a strong hint that you like your horror on the cerebral, sophisticated side... ;)
