Last Film You Watched

Sinister is a very good film, incredibly unsettling, which is a very hard thing to do now days and the criminally underrated Ethan Hawke is perfectly cast in the lead.

Worthy of more than a 7.

a 7 is a good film in my book. I'm not a fan of Ethan Hawke myself, always the same boring bloke. Looking at his films which I've seen: he was dull as hell in Gattaca, offputting in Predestination, forgettable 2nd-fiddle in Training Day, even more forgettable in The Purge (don't even remember him in it and only saw this a few months ago). Sinister had a slow start, almost to the point of switching off within the first half hour, but slowly got better and a really good final third.

From the proper-unsettling horror genre my favourites are REC 1/2, Taking of Deborah Logan, Open Water, the first 3 Paranormal Activities, Blair Witch (original). That rough-n-ready found-footage style.

I've had The Martian recorded for a couple of months, and now and again suggest to my wife that we watch it. She has a pre conceived idea that it'll be a bit slow and boring. Is it?

Boring (and I'm a hard sci-fi fan), plus Matt Damon is really annoying: his " I'm gonna science the shyt out of this " reminds me of that awful Facebook page: I fkn love science...full of inane pop guff.

If you fancy hard sci-fi take on Mars then I heartily recommend Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars. It's a book, mind.

Agree on all of the above, apart from Paranormal Activities- so bad, it's funny.

Ps - Give Ethan Hawke a decent script and you get a tune out of him. He's very good at playing " worn down / world weary ".

We do have the first of his RomCom trilogy with the French actress on DVD, when me & my better-looking half are in the mood we'll give it a go.

Paranormal Activity 1 is the only film (ever) to make me feel genuinely uneasy, maybe even slightly scared, after watching it. I first saw it at 3am-ish alone in the flat. When it ended I was honestly spooked out. Never had that feeling with any film. Its sequels are fun but that feeling wasn't repeated.

But for pure horror-thrills you can't beat REC 1/2.

Spectre - I'm a Bond fan and it ticks several boxes but even taking into account that plots and realism are never the focus of Bond films that whole final act retcon is pretty painful stuff. Especially after Skyfall had done a good job of resetting everything and it could have gone back to the standalone films of previous Bonds.

Deadpool 2 - More of the same and very good if you liked the first. I did but I can definitely see how if you were indifferent about the first or plain didn't like it this would be too much.

The X-Force assault was great.

Really enjoyed this film. A solid 7/10
