I'd like to sign this kid as well because Moyes clearly rates him but a quick glance at the last 5 years or so shows that whenever we've missed out on players the club has remained strong.

I've lost count of the number of times when we should have spiralled into the Championship. Was it really so long ago that people were saying we'd be screwed without Arteta for the rest of the season, yet we overhauled Villa and reached the cup final.

I'm not saying things are hunky dory because things can always be better but in times such as this it forces one to be resourceful and you have to hand it to both the players and the coaching staff in that regard because we rumble on regardless of the obstacles put in our way.

Might there be no inconsistency at all? Two Championship players looking to get a good Premier League pay packet: one club is apparently, offering it and the other is losing out because they're not willing to 'be held to ransom' as the local rags have it. That's a bit different than an established star player crying to his accountant about a change in exchange rates that'll take a few euros off his kings ransom in wages.

We have finished 5th 2 seasons on the run, which given our spending is amazing, the players and David Moyes will forever get my praise, but if your not moving forward, your standing still.

In Naughton's case its not up to him where he goes, its Sheff Utd's. We've had £6mill officially bid. Spurs have probably offered £8mill for 2 players, one will be loaned back to them. Naughton could've been offered £20k a week by us. Spurs would've offered £30k+ a week.

He's a young lad so sitting on his arse getting £30k a week aint a bad deal for him personally. Career wise it'll be a killer, but not for his wallet down in Soho.

Spurs have several right-backs already at the club who have cost them some considerable money, yet they seem to have more attraction than a club who has progressed so much under Moyes. We have a situation where we're looking to put pressure on the "top" four and the manager is admitting he'll be restricted to squad fillers and Bosmans. It's a crying shame.

Moutinho is going nowhere, he is contracted to Sporting Lisbon until 2014. Lescott on the other may well leave which will be a sad day for me if we lose a fine defender.

Bit of 'news' - if you call it that...

Right, just spoke to my Evertonian mate in Sheff who runs a shop. Naughton and his best mate are good punters, my mate spoke to them both yesterday but obviously they were both tight lipped, although the first thing my mate said was "Are you a Blue yet?" to which he replied "Not just yet!"

The facts:

1. Naughton was going to sign Monday just gone, until Spurs stepped in
2. Naughton WANTS to come to Everton
3. His agent is pushing for a move to Spurs

My mate has also seen a lot of him play and says he's the new Ashley Cole(in terms of player, not a shitbag of a bloke) and WILL be a full England RB within 2 seasons if he joins us

The much trumpeted Everton Way has clearly failed: player identified > deal done quietly and efficiently > player standing at Park End with scarf over head. That's the propaganda. It hasn't happened that way. They cant have their cake and eat it can they?

Did Everton broadcast the fact that a bid had been accepted? No

Did Everton broadcast to all and sundry that spurs had come in? No

Even when its not Everton's fault you take great delight in blaming Everton. I don't see no "Sheffield Utd, that team who were so badly done by the prem and West Ham, are now trying to cream off as much money as possible by going public with a bid and sparking a bidding war."

Everton are not blameless in many transfers but tell me specifically what they have done wrong in this one?

It's not just this transfer, though, is it? It seems every single fcking player we try to sign has to go through a long protracted process of will he/won't he all drawn out in the media, who seem to know better what is going on that the club officials.

Why can't we just do things on the quiet and then announce the signing when the player is waving an Everton scarf over his head? Instead we always leak it to the media weeks or months in advance and alert rival managers who pinch them from under our noses half the time. Look at how Arsenal conduct their transfers - it'll be a case of "who" on the Tuesday and on Wednesday afternoon they have signed and Wenger is parading his latest acquisition. Why can't we go about our business this way?

First post of this thread is 1-6-2009 - so it's been out there for fully 6 weeks and we still haven't managed to sign him and now looks likes faffing around for that time has allowed another one to get away.

First, we have 150 players linked with us. Bit difficult to keep things on the quiet, but Everton, unlike years gone by, done broadcast the fact. I'll give you Saha, Fellaini as transfers which didn't go through trauma, even though they were last minute purchases.

If you expect every single transfer to simply go through with no problems, I would suggest that your living in dream land.

Because it appears that some transfers are difficult, doesn't mean that all are. Its call keeping perspective and not seeking to blame Everton all the time. By the way, I hear no blame of Sheffield's conduct, which is beneath contempt, but oh, yes, let's bash our own team again.
