“...and the problem for Everton is they like to be part of the Champions League, but how you compete to the Big Six and the crowd historically-wise expect more, and that’s really difficult for Everton.”

Absolutely nailed us there tbf to him.
Did he?

His predecessor got us top 5; and his predecessor's predecessor got us top 4 and top 5.

He's chatting bollocks to try and mask the fact he was an utter failure here having spent £200M.

Not denying he did a less than satisfactory job (along with Walsh it must be added) but the unrealistic expectations amongst the fans makes it a tougher task than it already is.

In 27 years of Premier League football we have finished in the Champions League places once. To expect it of a manager is unrealistic.
His defence was that we have to compete with the top 6 - haven't we done that under Moyes a handful of times and with Martinez in his first season having had a negative net spend of £13M?

He spent over £200M and took us into the releagtion places.

He has zero defence. And he looks even more 'kin pathetic than previously by insinuating that what was asked of him was impossible.

Compete with them for a Champions League place. Competing with the ‘Big Six’ for something we’ve achieved once in 27 years.

I’ve no argument against the fact that overall he was a massive flop - but his point about Everton and the expectation is dead on.

And we should expect to compete with those 6 teams. 6 times in the last 15 seasons we breached the top 6. Why should we not have a reasonable expectation to get in amongst them again?

I know one thing for sure: Silva is here for his second season now and many of us expect him to get close to or inside the top 6. I do.

We have still failed to break into the Champions League bar one season - because we are competing with ‘bigger’ teams (of which there are currently 6).

I also expect an improvement on last season. Personally I’d prefer a cup final to a top six finish though.

No reason we cant get both.

But going back to Koeman: his claim was spurious. How you compete with the top 6 is what he said was the unrealistic 'expectation'.

The feller is a phoney. Attempting to salvage something from his time here by claiming what was expected of him was anything more special than was expected of at least his last two predecessors and his successor.

He was given a more than adequate warchest to get us on the path to competing with the top 6 and made such a pig’s ear of it that we ended up on course for relegation with a squad of 40 useless players.

Not defending Koeman or his record - there’s just a huge element of truth in the quote regarding the reality of the task at hand and our fans expectations.

Whatever one things of Moyes/Martinez they sort of suited the club in many ways and had both geeked out a certain niche. Lots of problems with both, but it's forgotten even Martinez's final season we got to 2 semi finals (and were extra time away from winning the cup that season as we'd have defeated Palace).

Neither manager were backed with any funds close to the teams above them.

The model wasn't perfect. It wasn't the Everton of our forefathers, or of being the dominant team, but it was working quite well. We ripped it up and undid all the positives that were there in the process.

Silva and Brands are slowly trying to pitch it all back together again.
