Conversation between two women, with an obvious age gap. The younger lady takes offence regarding questions of where she is from. The story is immediately released to the Media, papers, TV etc etc, by the younger lady. The elder lady offers an apology and is removed from her role at the palace. Why did this go public ? Who benefits ? Who suffers ? ….
Well one big benefit is it might stop British people being asked where they are really from. She is British, she was born here. Being old is not a defence for being ignorant.

Have you never been asked where you are from ? I’ve been asked this in South Africa, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Norway, Spain, India, Germany and the USA. Was any of this racist, of course not…this is just another manufactured grievance. One or both of these ladies may now be upset, but it’s the Media grievance-fest that gets me…..

And exactly how was the older lady to know. If the younger lady had just said I’m from London or wherever, born here but my family were originally from A,B or C……then there is no story…this has been manufactured……

You are not a minority (neither am I). But constantly having to defend your place is horrendous and minorities have to do this consistently. From the accounts of many people present she was grilled on where she is really from. It wouldn’t happen to me or you. We’d get a handshake and they’d move on. As to your post before, I have been asked about where I’m from. But UK/England usually suffices and I don’t get grilled about where my parents are from to justify that point

Perhaps, I just think a storm has been made out of this. An old Lady has been forced to resign from a role she probably loved and will have this hanging over her for the rest of her life……

It ain't the same mate. And you know it.

She also answered the question: 'Britain' and further added which part of London she was from. That wasn't acceptable and again, you know why.

It became an uncomfortable interrogation and it was clearly uncomfortable pretty early, but the lady kept at it.

Sorry, can’t debate the details you may have seen on UK TV.

I’ve only seen what is reported here, (middle East) not a great look.

Is she still employed ? Did the royal family defend her entirely innocent comments ?

Apologies if I’m playing catch up.

I regularly went to Goodison in the 70’s, also watched Colin Crompton on the Comedians and Love Thy Neighbour.

Those experiences didn’t determine my view of what is right, or wrong.

They did provide me though, with a decent guide to racist behaviour, that I disagree with.
Think she’s resigned.

But fully relate to your comments regarding not having your moral compass skewed by actions or views of others around you. Guilt should never be by association alone.

Probably not as it’s very different asking a white person in a majority white country where they came from as it is asking a person of colour who is a minority. This was not an event that was based on ethnicity, it was about domestic violence. Why does it matter where her family came from?
It doesn’t matter of course, and never should it form any basis of an impression of someone. But in the spirit of small talk conversation at a conference, is it completely off the menu in any case? Perhaps she was trying to connect with her with a story about previous charity work she’d done in Africa? I think the manner in which she asked her was more bad taste than the fact that she asked at all. It was patronising, but I don’t think that automatically characterises her as racist.

One good thing to come out of this at least is that Ngozi Fulani will have enough publicity to better the cause of her charity work for domestic abuse.

The woman she challenged has a role she’s is probably very proud of given she is shining a light on domestic abuse. She was invited to the Palace to highlight it. She has obviously had exposure due to this but do you think it’s been largely good for her? She will almost certainly have received more abuse by highlighting it than if she had just kept quiet and brushed it off.

But does this really justify claims of abuse and verbal violence, to be publicly transmitted via the media and her many appearances on TV ? I’m not really defending the older Lady, who was no doubt insensitive as 80+ year olds can be, but it’s gone way too far …..

It's how the be-crazed old slag used to curry favour with phil and liz, cowardly belittle some dark skinned individual, do a little jig, thrown a crumb from the royal table and it's position earned. I believe the term is 'flunkie'.
