Did I?

He voluntarily pays tax on his Duchy as the Queen did, key word being 'doesn't have to pay tax'. Sure we'd all like the option if we wanted to pay tax' or not though.

They all pay tax. Its the law. IHT for Monarchs was abolished ages ago cos whats the point? It would just salami slice estates that are impossible to value, and aint really theirs anyrate. For those still on the civil list, and thats their only income, I am less sure of.

Nope mate, the tax they pay is entirely voluntary

"Memorandum of Understanding on Royal Taxation" states it as such as well

Queen earned around 20m a year from the duchy of Lancaster Charles pretty much earned all his from the duchy of Cornwall - neither by law is taxable (Charles did pay tax on his but he decided the amount he wanted to pay)

Was way worse up until I think the 80s as none paid any tax whatsoever

Yup mate, basically came about due to negative media about the tax free royals, made worse due to the bloated civil list back then and the excesses of the likes of Princess Margaret etc

How much was their choice to volunteer to pay tax' and how much was a choice of volunteer to pay or legislation will be passed to the effect is anyone's guess though.

I may be wrong but from what I remember back when researching it years ago now I don't believe the civil list recipients pay tax on whst they receive via that - they pay tax on other sources of income though like anyone else

Through out history, there has always been a close, but nervy relationship between Crown and Parliament. And rightly so. Ultimately, Parliament can put them on the dole. So compromise is the result.

Seems pointless taxing it, just pay them less instead. But the civil list aint what it was a few decades ago is it?

Yeah similarly a government that done so would probably see itself out of power for a decade or more after as the support for royals is high in a lot of the battleground seats of an election.

Trying to remember if the crown still officially own all the coastal waters and seabed around Britain - if they do in years to come with renewables it'll be worth an absolute fortune in leases to power companies
