I wouldnt say hes been fantastic at all, hes shown glimpses of talent, the boy has a big future if he can kick on in the next 12months and the best way to kick on is to play every week at his age. He might well feature for a while, but we will sign more players and he will be pushed further behind.
He is someone who can produce something special at times, but is no way shape or form involved enough to be given a free role or act as a playmaker, thats why a good sorted loan would do wonders for him
A loan to where? Some Championship outfit where he'll learn nothing and just be targeted week in week out?

Better to let him stay in and around the likes of Rooney and our other talented players to learn first hand from them. Loaning this kid out to Championship riff raff would be an appalling mistake.

I feel while sometimes a loan can be good for certain players, i also think back to a year or so ago when tom davies made his everton debut as we were injury ravaged at the time.
Liam walsh and ryan ledson were both out on loan at the time and probably would of been selected ahead of davies if they were still at the club.
Davies got his chance and never looked back, ledson didnt see a path to the first team and walsh looks unlikely to be here in a year or so i reckon.
Its an out of sight out of mind sort of thing

I think Dave is possibly right. Getting some game time here and learning what is needed from him is the next phase in his career. He will get some starts and sub appearances as well.

Is this your first pre-season Zat?

He wont still be at the club by the end of September, hes a talented boy, but still only 19, the best thing that could happen would be a loan somewhere he can learn his trade.

As for my tactical masterclass, he doesnt only have Mirallas in "his way", not a chance we ever play that utter joke 4-1-4-1 ever again.

He won't mate, he will either be loaned out or will feature in small cameos or minor cup games this season.

He's been fantastic this pre-season. Created a very clear cut chance for Rooney, and started the movement that lead to the goal.

Last time I checked, Ronny understands that you keep score using goals.

He'll start next week in the EL game, score another worldie and firmly place himself in the frame for the 1st team all season. The championship will do nothing for this lad. He's got skill. Major skill. Turning up week in week out with that bunch of heathens in the Championship is useless. He needs to be training with the first team every day and get at least as fair a shot at Cocounts Martina.

He creates chances. That's what I think. Sigurdsson doesn't play for us, and I doubt RK seems him as a wide player anyway. Bolasie? Who knows, he wasn't all that great before he got hurt, and we have no idea how long it will take him to get back to 100% anyway.

I hope the poor lad isn't going to be one of those players who has to score from 30 yards every other game in order to keep the manager and supporters off his back. Most players are allowed quiet, ineffective games without anyone complaining, but flair players are never allowed an off game. If all that's been said about him in recent years is true, he'll be terrific for us, but he's going to give the ball away and try things that don't come when: it's inevitable. But he's bright and a keen student, and has everything going for him. Maybe he's one of the reasons Koeman is so cool about Barkley's situation.

Spot on mate.

There's a wariness about talent that just doesn't tally with the conceit of this club's supporters that they want a team that befits the school of science.

In the last 12 months I sense a determination to just give the plaudits to players who press and run hard...as if that's something any daft get cant do.

Davies managed to get in the team consistently because not only did he deliver quality moments but he had high energy levels.

  1. Dowell looks to me like the player we need for the attacking right position, cutting inside with his left foot to shoot and also using his wand to deliver through balls and passes into Klaassen, the centre forward and the attacking left sided player
  2. Sigurdsson would play on the left or centre surely not a new position on the right
  3. I didn't say he would be a consistent starter but I do think if he is playing every game in preseason at attacking right then he only has mirallas ahead of him (lookman sandro rooney all likelier to be on the left or centre) until bolasie comes back and that's the first half of the season gone.
  4. Our first game is in a few days, why play him so much in the build up to the season and not give someone whose going to start a game

I can see both Lookman and Dowell being rotation options for the first half of the season at left and right sides of the attacking trident.

Not sure what the purpose of a loan would be for a player we actually need and would play.

On limited viewing I think he can do it in Europa and cups at worst

I like him a lot, i just think that should be the standard for the three positions behind the striker.

To be far Koeman is giving him plenty of time to prove himself in pre season. A good season for him is to be coming on in matches and trying to break into the first team.

The lad didn't have his best game yesterday. Yet our 3 biggest chances he was centrally involved with.

The goal- he carried the ball and played a smart ball through to Sandro. This is the sort of run and pass that continues to allude Barkley.

2- The clip ball for Rooney. A great run from Wayne, but fantastic vision from Dowell and Rooney probably should have scored.

3- The run and through ball for Rooney second half. Again great movement from Rooney, but required Dowell's ability to pick a pass.

This is what you will get from Dowell. He worked hard yesterday. He will sometimes give the ball away, but I expect him to create lots of opportunities for Sandro, Rooney (and Giroud if he signs) if he plays. Even in games where he isn't at his best. Don't expect him to be centrally involved, he will appear on the periphery but will do small amounts of crucial stuff in key areas.

So yesterday Dowell didn't touch the ball much, or get involved in general play, but he created 3 decent chances.

If people are saying they don't think he is ready we are apparently about to spend £40m+ on a 28 year old who plays in almost exactly the same way.

He has a shed load of ability, and continues to show it in the Under 23's.

I do find that when he plays in the first team, he seems to lose faith in his ability. Instead of trying something he can pull off, he lays it off to a seasoned pro. For me, if he plays with confidence in his ability, he'll be some player for us. As shown at times yesterday, he's got the vision to link up with Rooney and Sandro, just needs to believe in his ability.

Very simple for me, the lads need double figures in goals and assists to get into the team. I like Dowell but that should be the standard for the positions he is competing for.
For any regular starter I couldn't agree anymore mate.

However not everyone is going to get a heap minutes, we can't expect a back up player to give us that kind of output on limited minutes and without a consistent run in the side. That's all Dowell could realistically be this season, a back up player. With the Europa League and is starting competitive matches in July we have to have a lot of options available.

If anyone looks at Dowell and thinks he's ready to be a good regular starter they're crazy but it's important to have backup options available and I feel Dowell is good enough to be used when we need to call apon him.

If we do get through to the group stages then dowell should stay and play in those games in the 10 role and play in the league cup games. If we don't I think we should look for a loan for him.
However I do agree with @davek that a loan to the championship on league one would do the lad no good at all getting lumps kicked out of him.
Even if you loathe them you have to say Chelsea sending me the likes of Christennson and Baker has brought them on leaps and bounds and I think Dowell would thrive playing regular football in the Bundesliga or even the Dutch league where they have a greater appreciation of technical skill.
The lad needs regular game time in a more competitive environment than u23 football.
