Paddy Boyland’s Athletic article reckons we only paid the Danjuma loan fee this summer upfront. Brought in £45m in transfer fees and have cleared £40m a year from the wage bill. The wage/turnover ratio should now be in a far more manageable state.
The more you see of just how bad things are in the wider business the more I think Thelwell and his department have had just about as good a window as they possibly could have. They have brought in three players in Beto, Harrison and Danjuma who greatly improve the first team all for 3m outlay, and secured what I think are really good fees for Iwobi, Cannon and Simms. Just wish they'd found a way to get a defender or two in but it sounds like it was even worse than the sell to buy we thought it was and there genuinely was not a pot to piss in.
When you add in the disappearing Gordon and Kean money he is operating a significant transfer profit and not getting it to work with, it's going straight into keeping the lights on. The business of a football club should exist to fund the football department, at Everton right now the football department is funding the business.
As frustrated as most of us are at the lack of a few more signings I suspect that if and when the facts of this period are known it'll be Thelwell and his people whose wheeling and dealing have kept our heads above water in spite of the utter shambles going on above their heads.
