Yeah he was! He couldn't cross to save his life but every winger in the league was afraid of him sliding in. First one that sprung to mind for me.
You're right, now defenders are judged on how good they are going forward, crossing, all sorts...the Dani Alves mould I guess. It ended up making Hibbert look like a fossil but, boy, could he crunch someone like Ronaldo flat dead in his tracks!
