Jose likes Stones right?

Everton want Mata

Everton needs to find about 30 mio in non broadcast income to accommodate increases in wages

Solution : the two clubs agree to swap players . We pay Utd 25 mio. They pay us 50 mio. It's not netted off, it's full cash flows

Everton has got Mata and can book a 50 mio profit

NB : I picked those numbers because they 'look' about right. Theoretically we could drive short term profitability up to any number ( eg if we wanted 100 mio, we sell at that price and buy Mata at 75 mio...the latter cash flow is NOT a profit/loss item but the 100 mio is)

You are probably thinking why sell Stones? Answer : we need profit from player trading

You then say : why sell to Man U
Answer cause they have something we want

Kind of like fixed / floating interest rate swaps and the like in finance

Out of interest Esk, is there a reason both deals seem to be quite drawn out? Purely logistical?

Deals are far more complex than even 5 or 10 years ago. The old days of a chairman phoning another chairman and deciding to buy or sell are long gone.

Now we have CEOs, DoFs, Chairmen and managers pitching to agents and vice versa, if there's traction then an approach is made to the club. If the club are receptive there'll be a discussion over price. If that's looking ok then the club gives the buyer permission to speak directly to the player. If that goes OK then the real negotiations begin over salaries, bonuses, media rights etc. Player sponsors have to be informed, sometimes contracts re-negotiated if there's conflict between existing sponsors and those of the new club.

That combined with early stage leaks makes the process seem much longer than previously. It's in no-ones interests to prolong matters, it's just the way it is.

With Everton now pitching for players who 12 months ago would never have entertained the idea there's an added complexity of having to sell the vision, prove the funding and give ideas of who else is likely to join, so that's certainly a factor with ourselves.

would add on top of that, that Everton are now dealing with agents they have likely not really been in the company of before as well - need to build that working relationship from scratch whereas for example mourinho with mendes would start several step down the line due to past deals etc

but yeah something as innocuous to us plebs as a player wearing an adidas boot with sponsorship for it signing for a team that wears a nike kit can cause complications etc

I think this last point particularly stands out for me, I've believed for a while now that the first 'bigger name' player wanting to join us is actually looking over his shoulder to see if another big name player has joined first, to provide the confirmation to them that there is a real project in place.

So the tradition of being Manchester United's feeder club with our best talent continues as we also continue to be a home for their unwanted/finished players.
Status quo it is then.

We also live in the age of breaking news, instant this and that and some having little patience, where folk are hitting F5 every 2 minutes, indignant that something hasn't happened in the meantime. In the past, we opened the paper one July morning to find that Lineker, Cottee etc had joined and pre-season preparation was the players bonding by getting wasted in a hotel bar.
