Jose Mourinho is boss

Paul Pogba showing all the statesman like attitude (or maybe just maybe the exact opposite of that) that has so characterised his own sojourn at the club has posted an Instagram picture of himself (since deleted) with perhaps a slight suspicion of a smirk - with 'Caption this!' the comment next to it and has perhaps continued to cause ructions even after the sacking, predictably drawing a withering response from many.

Several responses along these lines

Gary Neville " Caption this" You do one as well!

Pogba has been caught up in his own circus and the peripheral off field trappings that go with it and has been so far up himself as to believe most of the hype generated.

He has let himself down as much as any manager, his attitude has stunk the place out for too long, and while the obvious breakdown in relations and personal antipathy between him and Mourinho has led to an irrevocable split, he's largely underperformed since the day he signed, lacking the consistency of performance to be thought of as a great or even a good player, he's become just another letdown who had the potential to be so much more.

Even Hazard never a great fan of Mourinho and his methods was at least player of the year in Chelsea's title triumph before the split became poisoned enough for him to lay down tools.

Pogba like Morata at Chelsea and Ozil at Arsenal (this season) was a marquee signing that has never really come off. They have all recently been on the bench with a joint transfer price tag not too far short of £200m not to mention the wage bill, expensive reserves.

Of course Pogba would be far better with a manager who doted on him and top players around him all full of confidence and playing a system which very often affords skillful players time on the ball and options, perhaps in the French team or Italian football where a different style of play often affords skillful players more time and space or perhaps Manchester City and Guardiola.

Not everyone however will be signed by City and he may not have that opportunity. Guardiola is possibly as good a coach as you can get and is meticulous in developing his style to improve skillful players, but then you could probably name 238 skillful players who would be vastly improved if they played at City, maybe even more than that number.

There is only one Manchester City in the premier league though and they have their players, they can only play eleven and have their squad too, there is no prospect of going there anytime soon. Most players aren't so fortunate as to play for Guardiola at City, often they aren't best mates with their manager or his style of play.

Gareth Bale at Real was in and out last season as Zidane didn't pick him over others, he still performed when he was picked and often out of his preferred position too.

Top players adapt and don't fall down with their standards, Pogba although its not all black and white has generally underperformed on a regular basis over a prolonged period.

He can't suddenly be elevated as flavour of the month just because his nemesis has been sacked, his performances and attitude have stunk and given many nothing at all to smile about for a long time.

Whoever appoints him next is taking a massive gamble, he looks washed up to me, he commands serious wages and always makes sure hes protected in the event he gets bulleted.

Massive risk, which is cray cos at his best hes the best in the world for me, sadly he hasnt been at his best for a while now.

I can’t believe they’re considering getting Solksjaer. Crazy.

Indeed, you have to question the decision makers at United.

They are possibly the biggest club in the world and they are considering appointing some utter no mark who has done alright in the Scandy Leagues.

How far they have fallen.

The best decision they could currently make would be to appoint a DoF who actually has a clue.

Steve Walsh is out of work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jobs for the boys at United it seems.

What exactly has Solskjaer done to merit that? Relegate Cardiff? Not win a league again with Molde?

The only thing you'd think is that he's familiar with the staff having been U23 manager too. If you're United, you pick Blanc and be done with.

Jobs for the boys? BBC has Paul Ince pointing out that both Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce are out of work and know Utd well. Yes, oh yes. It would be like 10 Christmases rolled into one.

Just seen a quote from Ian Holloway on sky sports saying people in charge at united should do whatever they can to get Fergie back.

He really is as thick as he seems isn’t he? (Holloway)

I’m not sure of SAF’s current condition, but wasn’t he in pretty grim shape just a few months ago?

Until SAF is gone from this world (& quite a few years pass) they will be a basket case club. No manager will do brilliant with him sat in the stands as frankly the new person's record is not going to compete.
