2020/21 Jordan Pickford

What has been particularly eye-opening from all this fallout is just how many pundits and football journalists don't actually know the rules of football.

No one can possibly dispute the fact that it was a wild and reckless lunge that deserved a red card, but they couldn't send him off because the ball was not in play and it was not an act of Violent Conduct where the laws of the game do allow a referee to send a player off when the game is dead.

So Pickford survived because of a technicality, but a very important technicality. It's why referees have no decision to make if a player was to deliberately bring down an attacker who's clean through on goal if they were offside. If the player was onside then yes, clear professional foul and a red card, but because he was offside the entire action in void.

It's just incredibly basic stuff. I saw an article by Martin Samuel yesterday and he actually said that Pickford could have still been sent off and actually used Slaven Bilic getting sent off at half time against us as evidence for it. In what possible way is a manager getting sent off for abusing a referee and Pickford making an honest attempt at blocking a ball that had an unfortunate consequence the same thing?

And a further point, and possibly most dementing of all, is that we have just witnessed a biased Liverpool media campaign to get Pickford retrospectively banned. Make no mistake, the FA were not looking at this incident in any way shape or form. They wouldn't have had a leg to stand on (excuse the pun) to ban Pickford retrospectively under any single law of the game. Despite that though, we've seen comparisons to Roy Keane's challenge on Haaland, pundits describing it as an 'assault' and all the rest of it. They have tried to pressure the FA to get one or our players banned without proper cause, make absolutely no mistake about that.

It's truly disgraceful how infested the media is with them.
There are so many idiot pundits who can’t distinguish between the rules and what they think the rules should be.

Always seems a question of concentration and mental discipline.

He's a good keeper when his blood is up and he's having to react, but not when there is very little going on.

Personally I'd like to see him do some work with some cricket openers (Cook, Langer) to give him guides as to how to concentrate and wait for the right moment.

I think the criticism is disproportionate.

There's definitely a Jordan Pickford narrative in the media. Typical English press really, build them up to knock them down.

He's not helping himself this season, but he's not been as bad as the criticism has been.

That said, this season is the first time I've started to think we need another 'keeper.

Excellent post toffee-L it's almost as if in all their righteous fury they can't see the wood for the trees so to speak, examine the rules.

Even if it were allowable to send him off in such an instance then it would have to be something that neither officials actually had a clear view of and looked at.....

Then if you looked at precedent and the alternative of a retrospective it was clear they could hardly have decided anything else anyway.

Anything else is making Coote out to be a complete imbecile....(possibly not far from the truth)

How can you say he saw it and considered whether if it was a pen incase it was onside but didn't realise he could still refer it to the referee anyway to look at as just a possible red card? He either looked at it or he didn't

All those articles posted yesterday by the Mirror's John Cross (even if a mad gunners fan) were nothing more than the usual trashy red sh*te rubbish you expect from that paper. Keith Hackett even comparing it to Keane's one on Alfie Haaland in that paper. It's like clickbait in paper form, a joke.

And in the biggest game of the season so far, the derby, it was Pickford who bailed his teammates out.

Have to disagree mistakes from him are because he's looking for attention mate.

Think that's a bonkers shout to be honest.

Do I expect him to fly out to make himself as big as he could to a man left free? Too right. Peter Schmeichel would do it every other week.

It's unfortunate. As is Van Dijk being left unmarked at the back post.

On another day Van Dijk could do Pickford's knee ligaments. On another day neither are injured. On another day, someone might be arsed to actually stay with and pickup Van Dijk at the back post.

It is remarkable, fans like you pilling on him and him alone, ignoring the good game he had and instead preferring to revert back to every mistake you can think of.

Pickford has a MOTM performance, and you're pulling him up on ifs, buts and maybes.

Blinkered.

Was thinking exactly the same myself about Schmeichel , Big Nev would do the same he'd clear the lot out .
Every keeper has it drilled into them at an early age , but because its Pickford ....well yunno.

I understand Merseyside police have been approached about a criminal assault on a Mr VVD and are submittting a case to the CPS.

Its astounding really that so many cough cough Blues, have jumped on the Kopite media luvvies justice train, just to further their own opinions about Pickford... If it were their Keeper colliding with Kean, it would be just football... Dont see anyone coming over to give Pickford a hug like we did with Song over Gomes...
You'd have to say that's premeditated if he comes that far out of his box.

I was all for dropping him over his dodgy performances, but you cant do that next week after what happened at the weekend. If he makes another mistake then he has to be on the bench for a while

How is this breaking news?! It shouldn't even be up for debate? Retrospective action for what? Being a bit of a tit and slightly reckless?? If he doesn't come for that ball I would be apoplectic - granted he could have controlled his action maybe better, but he has to make a challenge there FFS!

Jesus Christ, the cryarseing from the red infested media is ridiculous?

He has got away with that like.

Have we had confirrmation that he's escaped punishment for his awful goalkeeping this season or are we still hopeful of something?

In all seriousness, his keeping for the 'winner' was awful. Despite having a good game. His confidence really is at an all-time low.
