He saved our bacon in the game v Palace, and Chelsea. He made a few good saves in this game too. But because he got caught out by what was quite frankly a complete freak goal he now deserves to be castigated as a poor keeper? Objectively he’s been absolutely excellent this season and it’s only those with an agenda against him who seemingly want to buy into the kopite propaganda who wish to see him torn down because he was getting too much attention over the summer.
Correction: he did HIS JOB in those games. Does he really get credit for making a few perfunctory saves?

And by the way, it wasn't "a freak goal". It happened because he made a disastrous decision.

There can’t be a situation where if he’s perfect he’s just doing his job and if he makes a mistake then its a disaster. You know that doesn’t make sense. He’s performed well recently but made a mistake on Sunday. That’s all there is to it. It’s not an indicator of a wider trend of performance int he same way that that he’s suddenly not a penalty genius for making a save v Palace. He’ll have ups and downs with us like all our keepers have but he’s a class apart from Howard and Robles and a cut above a lot of premier league keepers.

No just a comparison that all keepers make mistakes
At this rate he'll be getting a commendation off some people here for destroying our derby.

Cant people just accept that he was to blame 100% for that kick in the balls we all received on Sunday evening without all the qualifying statements that covers up his horrendous error?

Did you see the reflex of de gea against City when the ball just flew over his head. Pickford would have tipped that over the bar as it was straight at him.

Think Pickford has already been recognised as a top level keeper and was guilty of a bad mistake just like other top level keepers

Pickford is not in the same league as De Gea. Right now, Pickford is Joe Hart of yesteryear, which isn´t a bad thing because for a while Hart was good enough. He just wasn´t top level.

No one is saying he's not at fault you lunatic.

Oh but it IS. He has been like a chicken with no head in MANY games this season. Let's not try and portray this as an isolated incident.

That feller destroyed a professional and mature derby performance by the team. He should carry the can.

Joe Hart who was good enough to win leagues with City and be Englands number one. What an insult. I’d say Pickford is already at the level of peak Joe Hart but he still has room to develop whereas Hart had a few seasons at a very good level then fell off a cliff.

Obviously he was at fault, and also a big mistake at Anfield in the cup last season. Of all the games to have them in. Hopefully he can clear his mind and get back to normal on Wednesday. I'm sure the travelling Newcastle fans will be trying to give him a bit of stick as usual but just needs to focus on his game.

Which games are these? He looked ropey against Southampton, West Ham and dropped a clanger at the weekend. Thanks rest he’s performed well in.

Oh he was definitely to blame. He needs to show signs that he's maturing and learning. I still have faith in him, but he does need to grow up and stop overcomplicating things.

Are the ones who are criticising Pickford being consistent, and also writing off Mina as not good enough for us (I thought overall he did well, but we can pick on individual errors of all the players quite easily)?

Mina for example...

If he'd have scored his header from 8 yards out, we'd have got at least a point
He allowed Mane to get in behind him in the first half and nearly pulled him down for a penalty, and Mane should have scored
Origi left him behind down the wing, and think Coleman had to get back and cover from the resulting cross
Him and our other defenders allowed Origi a free shot on goal from 3 yards out when he hit the bar

4 times Mina let himself down.

Gomes got dispossessed for the chance that Mane blazed over in the first half and should have been punished. He also missed a header from a yard out.

I seriously hope we aren't considering paying millions to Barcelona for such a player who can't finish from a yard out and can be so careless in possession just in front of our own box. We need players who never make a mistake if we are to push on to the next level.
