Anecdotal, but my wife loves JP, though she thinks he's certainly a geek. But then, she doesn't find the concept of masculinity frightening or offensive, so that probably plays into it.

Bought his book when it came out but I still haven’t read it, working my way through some of the books he recommends and they’re all really good, if somewhat terrifying reads. Ordinary men was really hard to read. Currently reading crime and punishment. Equally hard but for different reasons. I’d recommend his suggested readings
