I'd really like to see Kenny given a chance before we go and spend money on someone like Martina.

As I said in the transfer thread, Unsworth is a huge fan of the lad and I think that shows the quality and commitment he has.

Kenny will be given his chance, the thing with Martina is that hes willing to sit on the bench and take his dollar, hes a warm body, he honestly cant be as bad as people claim, otherwise theres not a chance Ronny would be getting in him, hes a utility player, he wont be taking spots off talent players.

I know he's been highly rated at youth levels but he went out to Wigan in league one a few years ago before being sent out to Oxford in league two after that. He's not had a loan out to the championship and we've given first team opportunities at right back to a younger lad who is meant to be a center half ahead of him. He's had two first team appearances, Ledson had more than he had and was someone I thought was rated higher and we still sold him off to Oxford.

He's had two substitute appearances and all of a sudden people are saying we don't need a back up right back because he put in a few good crosses. I know he was always highly rated but I always thought he was going the way of Ledson rather than Davies.

I'm sorry but where was all this talk about how great he was and ready to contribute to the squad three months ago? Holgate walked into the squad and leapfrogged him.

I'm not saying he isn't a good player just that he seemed to be on a certain path we've seen other promising prospects go down and now after two brief sub appearances people are willing to take the chance on him as a back up for what is going to be a very intense season with a lot of matches to play.

who you talking about here?

Suspect Garbutt will be moved on and Galloway really isnt a LB for me, hes a CB that can play fullback, hes not a natural LB and it shows in his game, he can clearly do a job there, a very decent job, but still.

Would have been interesting if Baines got an injury near the end of the season, I suppose Gaz Baz would have played LB?

same case as holgate for me with galloway. It's the reason why i only want us splashing big on centre back. get williams, jagielka, mori and those two to fight it out for the other spot. Next summer jags will be gone and both of them can battle further up the ladder. And then after another year wiliams will be on his last legs too. Then we'll know for sure whether they're good enough to be a first team regular at CB or if we need to splash big on another CB.

I much prefer that than spending £25m on a bloody will keane who is no better than what we have imo. Both full back positions are now thin on the ground though, would like to get someone in who's comfortable in both positions.

I can't recall ever seeing Martina play so if he joins (which is looking very likely), I'll back him as Koeman knows him very well and Walsh would need to agree to it which shows it wouldn't be a signing that isn't thought through.

From a financial perspective and for Kenny, if Kenny is good enough it makes sense to not even sign him.

Who knows though, Martina might be on very small wages and on a free it could end up being a very good signing in value for money.

My mistake I thought he was older than Holgate. Feels like he's been here ages because we have heard his name that long. I honestly thought he was going the way of Garbutt.

probably seems like hes older cos hes been playing for the u21s/u23s since he was 15

By no means am I saying he isn't good enough or anything like that, it has just come as a shock to see every man and his dog calling for him to be in the team all of a sudden when he was being kept out of the squad all season by a younger player who is filling in and doing a job at right back.

Maybe him being away last summer with England U19s hurt his chances of taking that back up right back spot against Holgate who had more opportunity to impress last preseason.

Still though, Koeman had persevered with Holgate over Kenny for most of the season for his own reasons. I'm glad he's doing well but I was disappointed to see Ledson leave last summer and I just wonder why he couldn't get in the team ahead of Holgate last season.

Yeah, fair. Often youth players just suddenly 'click' though I think, and every time Kenny has been on view for the past half a season (whether televised U-23s, coming on for the first team or for England) he's stood out. Sometimes you just get a feeling about a player and I have to admit I had an inkling of it when he came on against Norwich in 2016! I agree with @MorgsGoat that he will definitely get the chance that he's good enough - I suppose I'm just really hoping he is so that my hunch is proven correct and I can pat myself on the back for being right ;)

I will fume if we go into the season expecting a player with only 12minutes of Premiership football to be our only fit RB for the next 7-8 months.

No matter how good he looks, we NEED another body in the RB area.

Holgate has been very solid there all year. We can bring Browning back as well. Whatever "it" is, Kenny has got it.

Why aren't we chasing a right back who's better than Coleman? What's the point adding to the squad if they aren't as good as what we have it's just a waste
I can agree with you but by going after someone better than Coleman it defeats the purpose of Coleman's new contract and we would be replacing him. Coleman is one of the hearts of our team and I don't want to replace him. If we have Holgate/Kenny/Martina to fill in until he returns that isn't terrible

Look what happened when Steklenberg filled in

Martina will be a disaster waiting to happen. I'm sure of it.

Pointless bringing players in who aren't as good as what we already have. Signing a top class young right back will give Coleman competition

Jobs for the boys, same reason why Baines will play every game next season, make no mistake of it Cuco will be ahead of Kenny in pecking order
