Joey Barton

One of the best around? That's going a bit far. He's an effective box to box midfielder. He's good in virtually every area but has no stand put strengths.

He'd definatly be a good addition to the squad but I don't see where he'd fit in. Moyes is looking for one creative midfielder (Fernandes/Osman) and one ball winner and I don't think Barton fits either catogary. He's not an out and out defensive midfielder or a creative midfielder.[/quote]

Id argue hes pretty strong at both, sometimes i think we have been so moulded by the 4-5-1 formation that we forget the concet of a box to box midfielder. If hes not a creative midfielder or a defensive midfielder and has none of these qualities why is he paid as a premiership midfielder of international recognition!

He's not disciplined enough to play the defensive role. He's got too much energy and he likes to roam alot which doesn't suit the role. His tackling is also hit and miss. He gets alot of yellow cards and dives in when he should stay on his feet. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying we should be looking for another Carsley who is ultra defensive but Barton for me is more attack minded midfielder.

I don’t think he’s suited to the creative midfield role either. He’s passing ability is decent but it’s not excellent he’s not going to open up teams with a piece of magic or brilliance. I don’t think he’s that intelligent or creative to be honest.

For me the closest we have to Barton is Cahill. He is also an effective box to box midfielder with no stand out strengths and his energy often gets the better of him. He gets excited and runs out of position alot leaving gaps in midfield.

Barton for me is best used in a 4-3-3 alongside a defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder. There he’s in-between and his energy and drive really compliments the other midfielders. Newcastle play the right system for him and they where starting to get he best out if him towards the end of the season. Sadly his attitude off the pitch means he’s never settled. If he gets himself sorted out he’ll be an excellent player for them.

Definatly a good player but I can’t see where he’d fit in.

this has nothing to do with any of his abilities as a player, but, i just cant see him playing and living permanently in this city, with all of his (and his familys) previous form.

he's not a box to box mifielder, he's not a creative midfielder, he's not a defender, he's not a professional footballer...he's a **** and he is finally where he belongs

crowd: where's ya brother gone?

joey: just gone for a piss he'll be back in a sec

oh yea, is he still banned from this city?

no good having some1 who is only eligible for 18 games a season

An interesting thing I think is....If any of Newcastle's new signings, or in the team already, who are Black, I wonder what they would feel like when they find out a team mate has a brother in prison of a racially motivated crime, and assualted a fellow team-mate at another club who was also Black (racially motivated or not)?

Why'd he lamp out Dabo anyway?

he's just a thug, many of us settle disputes with arguements etc...the barton family kill people

There all fair points mate, i would liken him to Cahill to a degree, i think Barton has a better range of passing and is more productive and intelleginet in his play in midfield, for me he uses his engine better particularly in his defensive duties. I think both are tenacious but Barton has more purpose in his all round midfield play then Cahill and better at positioning outside the box in an attacking sense. Cahill strength is his timing and positioning coming in/in the box, though likensses can be drawn.

Having said that both would be a pain in the arse to play against in a five man midfiled anchored by a defensive midfeilder and Arteta and Pienaar out wide!

Say in a fixture like against Fulham away this season.

I agree mate. Some good points there.

I don't think Barton and Cahill are nothing alike.

Cahill holds his position much better then Barton. His is very disciplined is Cahill, where as Barton roams around like a headless chicken proving a liability to the team.

He's a good footballer though Barton but such a liability on and off the pitch.

I wouldn't say Cahill holds his position. He runs around and leaves gaps in midfield. This a big reason why he doesn't play well in a 4-4-2.

He's suited to 4-5-1 because he can go wherever he wants. He can drop into a midfield position or he can play as a striker. It's an interchangable formation and it suits him.

Cahill is more of a luxury player than Barton. Barton is definatly more of an out and out midfielder as Neiler said.

I think he is much more disciplined then he was.

He played well in those spells he had in the 4-4-2 before he broke his foot.

He is much more suited to the 4-5-1 though i agree.

Just to annoy Chico!

----------------DM-----------------

Arteta ---Cahill------ Barton ----Pienaar

Provideing we get a qaulity Dm i wouldnt fancy playing against that midfield from an attacking or defensive point of view.

If you get by Barton and Cahill and the defensive midfilder you still have to deal with Yobo and Lescott. Not saying it should be our starting 11 but would offer a lot in terms of options.
