Joel Robles

His distribution - his availability for a back pass, makes us luck a lot better even when our defence was at sixes and sevens - he came for the ball punched saved with his hands - everything Tim is not!;)
Oh and a clean sheet!

Cue the die hard Howard fans streaming in saying "He didnt have anything to do tonight blah blah blah"

When he was needed, he stepped up, did what was needed, commanded his box. When his defenders needed him to be available, he was. When he needed to find a player to keep possession, his distribution was good.

Solid performance and the defenders looked far more comfortable.

Joel in.

He makes a massive difference to the defensive unit, because there's a belief he'll come for a cross, or come off his line if something dodgy is played in behind.

The defence second-guess themselves less.

I didn't think we'd concede due to a calamity from the 'keeper tonight; I only thought us not putting the game to bed would come back to bite us with a wonder strike or a lapse in concentration from the defence.

That nearly happened with Funes Mori, but Robles didn't put a foot wrong and the whole side looked more coherent from back to front because we had him there.

If that's the last time we see Howard in an Everton shirt, that can only be a good thing. Is Robles the long term answer? No, not for me, as I think better 'keepers are out there. But he's a lot, lot more of a better option than Howard for now.

Indeed. He's the best option right now. Definitely one of the positions we need to be in the market for though.

He's not a long term first choice for me but whenever he plays I'm just weirdly nowhere near as nervous. If a ball goes over our centre-halves I'm usually clenching to high heaven but when he plays I don't even notice.

Unless he picks up a mystery knock in training then it's star jumps for fun. I can't remember Robles having a poor game, certainly not one that sticks out anyway. Deserves a run of games now.

Don't you remember the one where he misjudged the flight of the ball and he saved it with his face by pure accident?

Or when he ran out into no mans land and the striker just looked at him and casually passed it in to the near post for a free goal?
