Joel Robles

I'm not saying he put in a bad performance tonight or anything, but I can't see how he'd be any more likely to start in the league now than he was yesterday. He certainly didn't do much wrong, but I don't see what he did that would make someone who didn't think he should start over Howard change his mind.

Well, two examples I can think of just off the top of my head.

When he came out and rescued Jags when he looked like coming off second best in a race with Aquerro.

Howard made a mess of a similiar scenario at Chelsea when Costa scored.

And that shot that came back off the post and Barry miscontroled leading to a shot on target which Joel saved.....not altogether dissimiliar to the Stones underhit backpass on Sunday which Timmy compounded by concesding a penno.

Plus I always fancy he will leave his line more readily and pluck the ball out the sky.

Do you really think any of those things are enough to change someone's mind, though?

Let's face it, he played about as well as anyone could who conceded three goals and only saved two shots, but that's still not that saying much. If he wasn't considered good enough to start in the league after the home leg, why would it be any different now?

If Tim Howard gave the same performance Joel did tonight you would all be tearing him a new one. Fact is the team defense is horrible. We allow the most shots in the league. They do their best to make any keeper we play look bad.
Ridiculous.he did absolutely nothing wrong.cant blame him for the deflected shot, can't blame him for aguero header or for the joke goal.he did things so much better than howard.there was no calamity.

I always respect that football is all about opinions, but sometimes I really do wonder what game people are watching.
There were two or three times at least tonight when I said to myself Tim wouldn't have done that. And not in a good way.
We don't know if Robles is a keeper, but I for one would like to find out.
99.9% of regular Everton football watchers see that he should be in goal week in week out.
We have a delusionally stubborn Manager, a handful of our American friends in here and one or two more that still defend Howard.

There wasn't much good, though, either. Again, I'm not saying he had a poor game, but it wasn't exactly a Southall-esque performance where he made a bunch of fantastic saves to keep a clean sheet and carry us through to the final. In the end, he gave up three goals and made two saves.

The big arguments for starting him are that Howard makes the defense play worse and Robles does more to help us win. The defense looked just as much of a shambles, and we ended up losing fairly convincingly. Now, I personally changed my mind about the goalkeeping situation a few weeks ago and would be happy to Robles play out the rest of the season, but clearly Martinez hasn't, and I truly can't fathom why you would think this performance would do anything to change his opinion about it.

He didn't have much to save really though did he.we were unlucky tonight and Robles did nowt wrong. He has done nowt wrong all tournament and if we had of got through and won there would have been an argumrnt to say he won us the cup.He is better than Howard. No dispute necessary.

That one beautiful moment in our wonderful history as a football club we were all blessed to have been given the best goalkeeper in the world.
Chances are we won't be seeing such a performance ever again here mate.
Yes the defence as a whole at Everton are terrible. I think we could have conceded more than 3 with Tim in goal.

But if Martinez didn't want to start him in the league after the first leg, what would he have seen in this leg to change his mind?

Look at him when we scored though, and then we go back to being our usual selves :(

4 games out of 5 howard wouldn't have given the same performance. 4 games outta 5 howard wouldn't have commanded his box like Joel last night. 4 games outta 5 Joel is the better keeper between them. It's not howard fault. It's our managers for picking him.
