Joel Robles

I doubt Ferguson scouted a footballer for the last 15-20 years, he didn't even take training for the last 10.

He also let Pogba go because of attitude problems when a was demanding playing time over Scholes and Giggs.

I've no problem saying I misjudged an incoming player, it's a bonus and wouldn't bother me at all. But top keepers are playing first team football at his age and not waiting to be thrown in because of an injury.
So Ferguson spent 20m on a player he knew nothing about? Even if you buy into that one why on earth did he extend his contract 3 years later? "Sir Alex Ferguson clearly has high hopes for the 22-year-old. "We are delighted he has signed a new contract," the boss told ManUtd.com. Anderson has developed tremendously since joining us and he has fantastic potential at only 22; he is going to be a really top player."

He misjudged Anderson badly, not quite sure how that can be in any doubt. As you say the Pogba one was a bit more complex but it still looks like he let a good player slip through his fingers.

We'll see if Robles develops into a top player or not. Think you are being harsh writing him off becuase he isn't a first choice GK at 24 - people develop at different rates.

Playing with the reserves, under 21s or playing friendlies in no way prepares you for playing competitive premiership football.
Robles is still a very young keeper and is just building up a rapport with his defenders and maybe gaining some confidence.

We really won't know what he will eventually be like as a goalkeeper for some time yet, but it does look promising.

I think you need to look closer to who the agents was and Ferguson number 2 was at the time to see how the Anderson deal went through..

No I don't - Ferguson misjudged a player and you seem to be going to ludicrous lengths to deny he did when even the most rabid Man Utd fan will admit it was a total cluster**** of a signing/extension.

Ha? I've mentioned it once and my inference is they bought a dud on the trust of his second in command and Ferguson didn't get his arse over the Alantic and watch Anderson at all.

But how does that explain Ferguson extending his contract 3 years later when he would have seen him play both on the training ground and on the pitch? Or continuing to include him in squads for big games on the rare occasions he was fit enough to play? Or not selling him when he shipped out lots of other players over the same period and not buying any midfielders to cover for his frequent absences?

He might not have known much about him when he signed the original contract but the only thing that explains his future actions was that he believed Anderson would become a top player eventually. He was wrong.

All that is Ferguson and Utds business but bringing it back to goalkeepers he also signed Les Sealey and Carroll, Bosnich and Taibi amounst other outfield crap players.

I'm really not sure what this has to do with whether or not Robles is a good keeper or not though?

Ha, not much!

It was merely a illustration that those who are paid huge sums to evaluate and manage young players, and generally do a great job, make some huge errors in judging talent. So the rest of us mere mortals who just do it on a part time basis on far less data shouldn't be worried about confessing if we get it wrong on a player or two.

As I hope you will be doing when Robles gives a MOTM performance to win us the Europa ;)

He looked dodgy again in the first half yesterday and would have cost us a goal if it wasn't for a great clearance from Jags, fair enough he settled down in the second half but he's about as reliable as an American weather man predicting snow.
See, I watched the replay a few times, he did all he could in that case and the ball went right by his head in a very flukey-lucky shot.
