i can't even begin to form a reply to this...textbook naivety with a sprinkling of appeal-to-authority.

Just like they honestly thought all those other drone bombs of the last 20 years were suicide-bombing vehicles...

Biden's bombs hit a residential neighbourhood, hit actual homes ffs. I'm frankly shocked you're quasi-defending this.

In a war against the Taiiban almost anything is game. Now personally I'd choose no war but the idea any western power could go into the mountains of Afghanistan and play Queensbury rules is for the birds.

The three most powerful countries in the last century and a half all fought there with the gloves off. All of them lost.

TBF none of them did go in there with the gloves off, not really.

Even the Soviets (who did some absolutely horrific things there, even by the standards of horrific things done in Afghanistan) devoted a fraction of their destructive ability to the region. They (and the British Empire, and certainly the US) could have gone in there and done what the Romans would have done (or what Alexander did when he took over there) ie: just killed everyone.

If your definition of "gloves off" is total warfare with mass mobilization, then sure. I don't think that's a good way to think about things in the superpower era. Competition for influence elsewhere, as well as the credible threat of a conventional war, checked both the US and USSR's worst impulses.

In the time period when the British Empire was off on its Afghanistan adventures, it's best to think of power projection capability as diminishing according to the inverse square law. The logistics, as well as the risks associated with committing that much military might that far from home, precluded total war at a distance.
