Current Affairs Joe Biden POTUS #46

Oh if he gets beaten in November, there’ll be a stampede of Republicans trampling each other in an effort to distance themselves from Trump.

Thankfully it seems like there’s a good number of people (including even some groups on the Right) who aren’t going to let them forget.

I read something interesting in bloomberg on Steve Bannon. Lots of interesting points but a couple stood out. Firstly, his attempts to find a successor to Trump when Trump brushed him off (Harry Moore or something like that) completely flopped. There's something very box office about Trump and guys with his background, life experience and media profile don't grow on trees. So finding another Trump type figure will not be easy.

The other thing that stood out, was the feeling that they just haven't really delivered on a lot of the promises. While for Bannon and other strategists tyhey may have had a medium term game plan to hold your Michigans, your Wisconsins etc with tax and spend policies. Trump has done the opposite, and at present looks set to lose all of those places.

It's hard for the Republicans. Essentially they either need to move away from being a low tax-low spend libertarian type party or they need to accept the route to electoral success will take longer and require perhaps a generational detoxification to start winning younger and more none white voters. Neither option looks massively appealing to them I'd posit. However, pretending to spend lots of money and enthusing that with a bit of bigotry, as things stand currently, doesn't look like it will work.

If they lose this election by say 6% it will be 4 consecutive elections they've lost the popular vote quite clearly, and decades since they decisively won the popular vote (by more than a couple of % points). It's quite long term decline for them, and they are probably where the democrats were when Reegan was around where they needed to fundamentally re brand, Even if they lose this one, it's 3 of the last 4 elections lost. Off the top of my head I can't remember the last time they had a run as bad as that.

“Life experience” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Well I supose I mean who have lived the life he has. Who have such a strong personnal brand. Who have buildings named after him around the world, and particularly in New York (interestingly not his buildings in most cases). This is the flip side to his madness. He's deemed a success, and there's a lot of Republicans who will probably accept the outward racism/sexism on the basis that he is at least successful. I'm not sure it's as easy to dredge up an Alex Jones type, who has none of that "success", brand recognition and life story, and make them into a success.

As with most successful people, and particularly in American (the home of the Great Gatsby no less) 90% of it is rubbish, but you can at least craft a nrrative about him. Without that veneer of respectability you just have a racist lunatic, and that won't sell as well outside of the core vote.

What will be interesting, is if he loses this election, how quickly people who pay him a lot of money to use his name on their buildings start reviewing those commitments and pulling out.

...that sounds an extreme analogy.

i was just thinking the Democrats could have a more dynamic and fresh candidate than Biden. I seriously hope he wins, but I’d be a lot more confident if Obama was running.
Truthfully there isn't much difference between an Obama and a Biden. Both are/were centrists. Obama talked about "CHANGE" and whatnot and was wonderful at alliterating his point but he definitely was more in the middle than anywhere else. He was absolutely charisma personified tho.

And you can think it's extreme all you want, somehow Donald fn Trump has put himself in position to corrupt every part of the government, especially the ones that are meant to be overseeing corruption. He's openly talked about going for more than 8 years as president, he's separating families on purpose, he's withholding aid to states that didn't support him enough. The guy is certifiably dangerous.

He fawns over dictators and people like Xi, Putin, Duterte. That's fascism creeping in.

Thank god for that...there can't be two like him.

Even if they had kept it in Biden would not have followed true on it. It was just another false promise like Obama.

But actually removing it altogether before election. Getting confident. Trump bad is all they need.

FWIW it was added back in

Biden has on paper quite an ambitious climate plan, if he does get elected it will be up to activists/elected officials/voters to ensure that he implements it. Given all the impacts my state is facing with climate change currently I can assure you there is a pretty large dem voting block that will notice if it is watered down.

I wouldn’t hold my breath or maybe I would as the air becomes more carbonated. This voting block really has put the shids on Biden as he and Harris disappears from a final draft of the amendment to cut fossil fuel subsidies.

Neo

liberal

corporatists

Where in that does it say it’s been added back? Not trying to cross examine you I read it and it didn’t seem to say anything like that. It’s likely I missed it.

Sorry, you were correct, it was me that wrongly assumed that the campaign’s response would mean that the draft was corrected. However from the bit of digging I’ve done seems that the removing fuel subsidies was still not in the platform just voted on. These platforms are largely symbolic but symbols matter and the draft should have been corrected.
